Linda's Story
After graduating from Red Bank High School in Chattanooga, TN, I attended Virginia Intermont College, a girls junior college, and finished my degree at the University of Georgia.
Fortunately, I found a teaching job in Virginia Beach, VA., where I taught English electives -- public speaking, theatre, journalism, visual language and advanced composition among other subjects.
I coached forensics for 30 years, sponsored the newsmagazine for 11 years, and directed the drama program for 9 years. My students won over 500 awards for their talents.
I took a year's sabbatical in '78-'79 to get my MA in communications at the University of Arkansas.
In 2001, I was honored to be named BHS's Teacher of the Year. I've been named to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" four times.
After 37 years of teaching at Bayside High, I finally retired. Now, I'm busier than ever. My activities include: five writers' groups, Bunko, Circle and an RV club.
My husband Ed and I travel with our RV. We took a 3-month trip in "09 to 20 states, including Alaska. Married for 39 years, we're ballroom dance dropouts.
For work, I copyedit and teach seminars. I copyedit Eastern Virginia Medica...Expand for more
l School's magazine. I also do consulting work on public speaking for EVMS. I teach seminars on public speaking, grammar/wriiting, punctuation, oral reading and college application essays for The Muse Writers Center. I serve on the board of directors for Hampton Roads Writers, Virginia Beach Writers and Seven Cities Writing Project.
Photography has been a life-long hobby, and I'm still taking way too many photos. On our trip to Alaska, I took around 5,000 photos.
Now that I have some free time, I'm pursuing another interest. So far, I've written over 40 true stories about my Tennessee family and my own experiences -- mostly humorous.
My first published story came out in "America's Got Stories" in August '11. I've had stories published in two online magazines and four other anthologies.: "Puppy Love: 2015" and "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Teachers.," "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Grandparents." and "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Laughter Is the Best Medicine."
Aside from these things, I enjoy socializing with friends and trying to keep up with my dog--Duffy, an independent, quirky Westie,
I always like to reconnect with old friends and former students.
