Linda's Story
I attended Williamsfield Elementry from kindergarten to the 4th grade. My elementry sweetheart was Doug Baird.
From there we moved to Avon, Il where I went to school from 4th grade to my sophomore year. Then we moved to Bushnell, Il. I attended B-PC High my sophomore & junior year. My high school sweetheart was Gary Knapp. Then I married Dan Cortelyou in 1971 and had Monica Kay Cortelyou. Divorced in 1979. Went out with Doug Baird. My mother and friends had something to do with that. But met my current husband Ricky Kern from LaHarpe, Il and got married in Aug of 80. Had Pamela Renee, 7/16/1981. Moved to Mocksville, NC in December of 1982. My husband was manager of Whip-O-Will Farms, purbred Polled Hereford Ranch. I was secretary and bookkeeper. Had Kristina Rayann June 7, 1983.
Moved to Raleigh NC 1992 to present. Ricky took a job with North Carolina State University as Beef Farm Manager for the teaching herd. Angus & Polled Hereford cattle. I worked for NCSU for 5 years in the Animal Science Dept. 2 year in Beef Extension as secretary and then 3 years as Dept Head secretary. Monica lives in Carbondale Il and is married and has 2 sons. Myles Nathaniel born 11/16/1997 and Seth Elijah born 5/20/2007.
I spend much of my time working on genealogy stuff for all our families. I really love doing that. My husband also manages a 1000 head cattle operation in the eastern part of NC on the side. I try to keep track of all of them. More Database work love it.
Like to sew, and like being outside. I now have 7 Rhode Island Red hens. Started with 10 chicks. Our youngest granddaughter is going to put them in the NC State Fair. Which, is one other thing I do. Starting in Sept of each year I start to work at the NC State Fair Office. We get ready for the livestock shows. (Cattle, sheep, hogs, goats, & Dairy livestock)
I love doing this. I'm not much on showing but this gets me close to where my family are and I get to be busy. They don't need me any more to fix the girls hair. We have had loads of fun. Traveling to county fairs, state fair and even Polled Hereford Jr Nationals over the years. Now we are getting ready for the next generation.
