Linda's Story

Life After graduation I obtained my degree in nursing. Three years later I returned to OSU to take my premed courses. In 1987 I graduated from the College of Medicine at OSU. I moved to Chicago for my residency training in emergency medicine. While here I met and married my husband. I now work at a Community Hospital in northwest Chicago in the emergency department. My husband and I adopted 3 children and also have custody of my niece. We now have 4 children: boy 38 (who graduated from OSU, 3rd generation Buckeye), girl 34 , girl 29, and boy 23. I have three grandsons. We lived in a northern suburb of Chicago for over 20 years. In October of this year, I took a job as a residency program director at a new EM program in the central valley of California. We live 45 minutes from the Sequoia National Forest. I have worked as the program director for 7 years. It has been a rough year with COVID. Still going to work every day. Providing education for the residents in the program as well as support. They never realized that emergency medicine or medicine at all could be so rough. My husband works as a physician assistant for the surgery service at the VA hospital in Fresno. He likes it very much. And yes, my job is a lot like what you used to see on ER on television. My children are all grown and doing well. My oldest, Chris, married another Buckeye. Lives in Pittsburgh. Has two children, both boys. He is the director of a community center there. My niece was adopted as an adult and is now one of my daughters. She is married and has a little boy. They recently moved to Deerbrook, IL, a suburb of Chicago. My youngest daughter graduated ...Expand for more
from Roosevelt University in Chicago and has a job at a software company. She lives with her significant other who works for the City of Chicago. He recently proposed to her and the wedding is scheduled for August 2022. (Hopefully COVID will be over by then. My youngest son graduated in June 2015 from New Trier High School and his only motivation was to play video games all day. He now lives in Round Lake. Has had some problems with the corneas of his eyes and had recent surgery. He needs another operation. Thank goodness he is still on my husband's excellent health insurance. Our move to California has been very interesting. It is great being the program director. Lots of work for a new program. I really like the patients that I take care. The town isn't that big though but it is close to everything. Claude and I have been to the Sequoias to go hiking, the beach to have lunch, to the wine country to do wine tasting, Yosemite to stay in a resort cabin, Pine Mountain Canyon to spend the night, San Jose to see the sharks play, San Diego for conferences, Mammoth Lakes for skiing, and lots more. I have to say that COVID has really put a stop to looking into travel. More than that, considering my age, every shift is a chance to be infected with COVID and become seriously ill. As soon as the vaccine arrived in the central valley, I was there on the first day to get the vaccine. We still take precautions but I am not so worried anymore. I would like to retire next year or at least get a job that does not do clinical shifts. I have interviewed for a couple but one I didn't want and one in which they hired someone else. But I still have time to look.
