Linda's Story

I was born in Blount county to Ed and Grace Hatcher, who were Walland residents most of their lives. Daddy passed away in 2000, and Mother has been living at Asbury Assisted Living in Maryville. I have one sister, Christine, who currently lives in Maryville. I only recently discovered that my Grandmother, Martha Elizabeth Patty, was part Cherokee indian!! One never knows what discoveries will be made in later adult years! At any rate, I am certainly proud to have that heritage. My Grandfather, David Washington Patty, was of French ancestry (Normandy). My Grandfather Hatcher's ancestors were from Lincolnshire, England, and I believe my Grandmother Hatcher (a Blair) was also of English heritage. After high school graduation, I received a B.A. in English. During my senior year, I met Ben, my husband, on a "blind" date. He was in graduate school at ETSU the time. We were married in the summer of 1965. We found ourselves in Blacksburg and Roanoke, VA, afterwards, since Ben was continuing graduate work at VPI. He was lucky enough to receive a research grant, while I taught in the City of Roanoke for 4 years. When Ben completed his degree, he worked at Savannah River Plant, and we lived in North Augusta, SC for 3 years where I taught in the Aiken County School system. Then, we moved to Raleigh, NC, where Ben worked for Carolina Power & Light, and I taught at Raleigh Academy, a private school, for 3 years. In the late 70's, Ben accepted a position at ORNL in Oak Ridge, TN, and I taught briefly at Northwest Middle but mostly taught at Farragut Middle (19 years)...just retired May 2009. After the move to Knoxville, I completed an M.S. in Education-Curriculum at UT (before I began teaching in Knoxville). My husband will retire at the end of March 2010 but will continue to work part time at ORNL. Throughout our years together, we have traveled to many places. We were in Italy again last fall. Our main hobbies are traveling, dancing, and enjoying good food and wines. We were brave enough to take Argentine tango (AT) lessons and actually dance in some of their dance halls and clubs during the times we have traveled to Argentina. We continue to take dance lessons, including AT, at our studio, Absolute Ballroom, here in Knoxville, and often take lessons from national and international professional winners at our studio, in Asheville, or Atlanta. My instructor and I usually compete 2-3 times a year. Since I retired, I have been busier that ever! I visit Mother often. She is now at Baptist Health Care in Lenoir City, only 6 miles away from our home. ...Expand for more
Mother is 90 years old and is currently recuperating from lengthy stays in a therapy center and the hospital, due to a fall and later contracting C-Diff. Enough! I hope to hear from some of my classmates. I certainly enjoyed seeing many of you on our 50th as well as our get-together last year! STORY WIZARD Childhood Memory? Not long after I had received my driver's license, an out-of-state driver hit our car while I was driving (Mother was with me). I just knew that Daddy would never let me drive again. He said, "You're okay, aren't you?" I said, "Yes." Then he told me that he wanted me to drive to the store to get him some cigarettes (times have changed). I thought he was crazy! Years later, I realized his true intention...for me to "get back on the horse and ride it" so I would not be afraid to drive again! How do I blow off steam? I have a martini with my husband! My obsession? Our dogs, Lhasa Apsos, They have passed on, but we are looking for another breed that will have similar characterisitcs but less hair to maintain! Talk style? I try to use only the current fashions that look good on me...not just because a fashion is "in." Quality and appearance matter more. I had only received my driver's license for a few days, only to have a person from out-of-state ram my driver's door as I was signaling and making a left-hand turn. ( He tried to pass me). Although he was cited, I felt that I would be in trouble with Daddy. Instead, Daddy made me get right back in the car to get him a back of cigarettes at the grocery store (which I could do then). I believe that i would have hesitated to drive again if he had not done this. My first job was at a restaurant in Florida, where I got paid ? plus tips to wait tables. What I remember most about it is counting the money I had earned. I blow off steam by Jazzercizing and drinking a martini. Oct. 2011 - In addition to our individual dancing instruction, we took a group course to learn the paso doble, a Spanish dance usually with a "matador" and "bull." We decided to do a routine at our studio's Halloween party. Ben was the matador and I was the bull....high energy and lots of fun!! Not to settle just was dancing the paso, we attended an Argentine tango masquerade party last night. Obviously, dancing is one of our favorite pasttimes. An unexpected surprise about my life? (1) That I married such a loving and wonderful man (2) That I have traveled to so many different countries (3) That I enjoy dancing as much as piano; I actually spend more time dancing! (4) That I have so many interests!
