School
Went to the Mount expecting to major in art, but the art nun got transferred after sophomore year. Took piano the whole time, so got to do nifty things, like accompany the choir and soloists. Got to deliver the valedictory speech, even though I practically fell down the stairs on stage during rehearsal. Became an opera fan, but couldn't afford to go until college.
College
Actually liked St. Dom's in St. Charles, met my husband on a blind date for a Christmas dance in 1966. Got married in 1968, moved to Ohio, and went to grad school in journalism after working at a daily newspaper. My last day of class was May 4, 1970, when four kids were shot by the National Guard in back of my building at Kent State. My classmates, teachers and ...Expand for more
I finished our term in church basements and front porches. I worked in PR and completed my thesis just in time to move back to Chicago in 1971.
Workplace
Started at the St. Charles Chronicle after high school and throughout college, even subbing for the editor on his summer vacations; was a police beat reporter (the town drunk wanted me to write his memoirs) in Ohio; worked in public relations for a university branch and an outdoor historical drama; moved to Chicago and Corp Com at a brokerage; moved to Boston, where I taught at Suffolk U. and husband at Boston College; moved to Carbondale, where hubby taught; moved back to Chicago, same brokerage; then moved to New York office of same brokerage when husband taught at SUNY; got dream job in Manhattan at EF Hutton, was recruited away to the burbs, where I got to do dynamite creative work for a utility company (this NY stuff all going on while I had 3 children in 6 years). Taught a graduate class at Iona College, worked in newspaper training for a Dow Jones subsidiary, worked in PR for hospital 1.5 miles from way-out exurb home in Goshen, NY (best job in world); then husband got job at Bradley U in Peoria, and we moved back to Illinois after 11 years in NY. Worked for Bradley 9 years in PR and Development, then taught 3 years at Illinois State. Started 2004 as a fund-raising exec for Peoria Ballet.
Retired to Oregon Coast in 2011. All three of my children live in Portland. Currently do grant-writing for the Childrens' Repertory of Oregon Workshops (C.R.OW.) in Florence. Also did part-time work for the Siuslaw Education Foundation as a development specialist. Was employed part-time at Florence United Methodist Church, where I produced weekly online worship until the end of 2022.
