Linnea's Story

I've lived in the San Francisco Bay Area permanently since 1969. My parents moved here in 1965, when I was attending Douglass College in N.J. , but I remained in the East to finish school. During that time, I married Tom Woodward (class of 64) and transferred to the U. of Md. However, I spent my summers in CA. working at the Stanford University Library and we moved to Palo Alto right after Tom graduated from the Maryland Academy of Art in Baltimore. We divorced in 1971. I currently live in Berkeley, CA. with my husband Rick Christiani, whom I married in 1974. We have 2 grown children: our daughter Ashley (from my marriage to Tom ) was born in 1969, and our son Eric was born in 1975. Ashley has given me 2 beautiful grandchildren, Zoe (8) and William (4). She's a physician and lives nearby. Eric is still unmarried and lives in Jackson, Wy. Rick and I have been together since 1973. We lived for 3 years in a coastal redwood forest west of Palo Alto before moving to Berkeley in 1976 to do graduate work at the University of CA. I earned a masters degree in library & information science and Rick earned one in architecture. He currently runs an architectural firm in San Francisco (Christiani Johnson Architects) which specializes in housing. I spent 8 years automating academic and corporate libraries and the next 22 years working in the information industry, primarily managing commercial online databases and licensing electronic information. Most recently, I was V.P. of Business Development for a consulting company which helped publishers license content to internet services. I retired in 2008, to have more time for travel, my grandchildren, writing and volunteer work. My husband Rick was born and raised in California and became an avid rock climber and skier while in high school. Over the years, I learned to share his love of the mountains...Expand for more
and we raised our children skiing, backpacking and climbing in the Sierra's. We're both lifetime members of a climbing gym in Berkeley, too. We still do high altitude trekking whenever we can, but we've stopped carrying heavy backpacks now that we're older. In 2004, we did a 120 mi. trek in Bhutan; in 2005, we trekked to the base of Kangchenjjunga in Siikkim, India; in 2006. we climbed over 21,000 ft. on the Tibetan side of Everest and in 2008, we hiked the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, crossing an 18,000 ft. pass in the middle. Our Everest trek was described in a Searcher Magazine article i wrote (Jan. 2007) and is still available online. Rick and I went back to Nepal this fall (2011). We first trekked from Simikot into Tibet and circled Mt. Kailash, a mountain that is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. The circuit crosses an 18,000 ft. pass and is supposed to erase a lifetime of sins. Thus cleansed, we flew back into Western Nepal and flew to Jhupal, landing on a tiny dirt air strip surrounded by mountain peaks. From there we hiked for 3 weeks into and out of the Inner Dolpo. Our son joined us for this part of our trip which took us into a very remote, rugged and beautiful area where people lived as they had for hundreds of years. It wasn't accessible by any roads or even small planes. I celebrated my 65th birthday in a tent at 15,000 ft. before crossing our third high pass and dropping down a deep gorge. We spent another 2 1/2 weeks sightseeing in India before returning home to Berkeley just before Thanksgiving. After nearly 3 months of eating Nepalese, Tibetan and Indian cuisines; the turkey tasted great! Not sure where the next adventure will take me, but I'm up for it. 2015 Update: I haven't been an active member of Classmates since 2011.
