Lisa's Story
I've been working as a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the past 17 years here in Manatee County. I also do extra work for the Public Safety Department as a communications liaison to all of the fire departments in the county. It was easy for me to start that up because I had established great relationships with a lot of the chiefs and officers during my four years as a volunteer firefighter/EMT before I got married. It's a much different life than I ever thought of during high school, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
In 2007, I was named Telecommunicator of the Year by the Florida Chapter of APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officers), and also the Dispatcher of the Year by the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch. The last one was the best because it involved a trip to Las Vegas (my first time) and a chance to meet the family of the young man who I helpe...Expand for more
d over the phone when he was struck by lightning.
I've been married to my husband Brian for 16 years and we live in Bradenton. He is a lieutenant with East Manatee Fire Rescue, as well as an instructor at the fire academy at MTI. We have a 15 year old daughter, Shelby, who attends Manatee High (sorry) as an AP+ Honors student. Round it out with our doxador (black lab/dauschaund mix) "Shadow", Himilayan "Marshmallow", and tabby cat "Ginger" and you could say that I'm a mother of four.
****Update: June 09 -- My job description changed this week. Effective July 4th, I'll be the Fire Liaison for the communications center. Looks like my part time turned into full time. Good things: spending more time with my family, being able to work in my office more & get more done. Bad thing: I haven't worked a "normal" job in 17 years, so it'll be a big adjustment. Wish me luck!
