Lisa's Story

Life A Bit of Lisa’s Story Lisa Fithian has been working for social change since the mid 1970’s. She has been a student, labor and community organizer on a broad range of issues from the environment and worker rights to peace and global justice. She has spent her adult life working with people to understand the dynamics of power and has help thousands gain the experience and skills they need to fight for justice – no matter how great or small the cause. Lisa began her political work early on serving as President of the student government both in high school and at Skidmore College. As a student leader she served on the board of numerous state and national student organizations. After college Lisa worked at Save the River where she began working with Abbie Hoffman. Between flower gardening and organizing meetings, she was instrumental in winning a major battle against winter navigation-a billion dollar Army Corp of Engineer project on the St. Lawrence River Seaway. Abbie turned Lisa on to what was happening in Central America in the early 1980’s. This is where Lisa first started learning about war, solidarity and direct action. Working both in and out of the system, Lisa Fithian, has continued to work with many different groups to During 7 years as coordinator of the Washington Peace Center during the 1980’s, Lisa organized hundreds of actions on a range of issues both locally and nationally and helped lead an extensive anti-racist process that successfully transformed the Peace Center into a truly multicultural organization. In the early 1990’s Lisa joined the labor movement, bringing her experience in nonviolent direct action to the Justice for Janitors Campaigns in Washington DC, Denver and LA and to nursing home workers in San Francisco and Detroit. She also worked with the UAW in developing their Rapid Action Team (RADD) and with the Detroit Newspaper Strikers. She continues to provide support to wor...Expand for more
kers and immigrants as needed. Most recently Lisa help coordinate the large Justice for Janitors strike in Houston, TX during the fall of 2006. Lisa and her collective--Root Activists Network of Trainers (RANT) has providing training and organizing support to many of the global justice mobilization around the world since the Shut Down of the WTO Ministerial in Seattle in 1999. These have included protests against the IMF and World Bank, the FTAA, Free Trade Area of the Americas, the G8 with trainings in France, Scotland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico, Canada and the US. After 9-11, Lisa continued her work in the global justice movement while helping the anti-war movement get off the ground. Lisa has been active since 2002 in the leadership of United for Peace and Justice, serving as a National Co-chair from 2002-2004. Lisa was actively involved in supporting Cindy Sheehan in her encampment outside of Bush’s ranch, and helped coordinate the Bring Them Home Now Tour, in which three RV’s/caravans traveled different routes across the country to a National Anti-War Mobilization in Washington DC on Sept. 24, 2005. This began just as Hurricane Katrina hit. One of the vehicles--the Veterans for Peace bus broke off to provide support, while the tour participated in over 200 events in 56 cities in 28 states in 21 days. After the mobilization in Washington, Lisa returned to Austin, her current home, but then left to go to New Orleans in early Oct 2005. Lisa spent the next year organizing and building Common Ground Relief, an organization consciously using race and class privilege to move volunteers and resources to the most neglected and marginalized communities in New Orleans, to help prevent what could be the largest gentrification project in US history. Lisa Fithian is 46 years and is back in Austin, still organizing against the war and building a grassroots peace and justice movement committed to radical social change.
