Lisa's Story
Hello, hello, hello
Well, to start off, I was married right after high school, but divorced in 1981 - have 2 beautiful daughters - 3 precious grandchildren and 2 extraordinarily wonderful great-grandchildren (that's what happens when you have kids right away!). My oldest daughter lost her husband last year and she is still struggling with coming to terms with his death. My brother, Tomas Gutierrez also attended JD - passed away from cancer in 2005. I still miss him very much to this day, he was my best friend. After my divorce I worked for Rowan Companies, Inc. for almost 29 years as the Personnel Supervisor. After happily being retired for a couple of years, the director of Volunteers at AIDS Foundation of Houston asked me to be the Child Monitor at Thomas Street Health Center (use to be the old Union Pacific Hospital on Bishop and Thomas Stre...Expand for more
et. At first I didn't want to return to work, but thought why not, it would be something entirely different then what I had ever done. I had a ball with watching the children while their parents had clinic appointments. Loved, loved working with the children. Anyway, lost that job when the grant was not renewed. That's the problem with working for nonprofit - never know if the grants are going to be renewed. I have been volunteering in the AIDS/HIV community for over 30 year in so many different capacities. I am a certified Handmaiden of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, quite an honor to have been selected to attend a special training class in SF in 1994 and one I am truly proud of. I stay very busy with my church, Our Lady of Guadalupe. I help with the RCIA class, doing all the paperwork; booklets; calendars; etc. All, in all, my life has been good.
