Lisa Cabello:

CLASS OF 1978
Auburn High SchoolClass of 1978

Lisa's Story

I had just turned 18 when I graduated in 1978. We were at a school event for graduation and looking at pictures and memories of our High School Days when our Class President said to me. "Lisa, you are going to reach your "Highest Heights" At the time he was teasing me because I am short or vertically challenged. I'd like to ask him "How am I doing so far?" I was one of 2 women who broke the glass ceiling at Auburn High School in 1978 by taking Small Engine Repair with Mr Dooley. It must have been a very embarrassing time for AHS because we were never put in the Year Book or even mentioned for such an Historical moment. I used to get weird looks from people when I would walk the halls in between classes. I guess women fighting for equality back then were limited to not shaving their legs or something. Prior to that NO women EVER took Small Engine Repair or the dreaded wood shop. I was the first woman who ever went into the wood shop to decorate the window for an event that our class was holding that year. (because no one else wanted to do it) Man...Expand for more
y people may laugh at the thought but if you were a teenage girl back in the 70's and walked into the wood shop you know what your fate was. Whistles, catcalls and even worse. (I took one for the Team!) To ALL the guys in my Small Engine Repair Class YOU all ROCKED because you helped me understand the machines, the tools we had to use to repair the machines and the knowledge needed to understand it all. I joined College ROTC at WPI in 1980. I had a best friend in college who was Navy ROTC I made First SGT. I've been accused of not conforming and "walking to the beat of my own drum." Today we call that "thinking outside the box." No disrespect to anyone but I've never been in the box. I have spent over 40 years as an Early Childhood Educator both in Auburn, Worcester Mass and in Phoenix, AZ. I have taught children from ALL walks of life or rather they have taught me! 2 Quotes: Led Zeppelin "Living, Loving, She's just a Woman" Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. - Dr. Seuss
