Lisa's Story
Life
How can I complain? I have two wonderful, happy, healthy dogs, one healthy though grumpy cat, a healthy though overworked husband (married 9/24/05), a roof over my head, a job I love, hobbies I love, all in a pretty nifty little city. That's a better life than I could have engineered if I'd tried :)
School
I'm kind of a school addict. After the compulsory years and finishing high school, I followed my big brother's footsteps to the College of William and Mary. I next racked up nine graduate credits but couldn't quite make it through the whole master's degree before burning out. After a few years, I was ready for more, though, and got my master's in museum education, a program that W&M no longer offers but that gave me a great opportunity to learn a lot about non-traditional curricula using unusual materials in non-classroom settings. That came in handy in my career! But...after another few years, of course, I wanted more, so I packed my bags and went to law school. Three years and a billion dollars in student loans later, you'd think that would be enough, but no. I've also completed half the courses in the Digital Design diploma program at the Art ...Expand for more
Institutes, a technology commercialization course at CMU's Jones Center, and seminars in finance and accounting for nonfinancial managers, graphic design for the web, web design and layout, and XML, and community college courses in JavaScript and CGI programming. So I guess that makes me a school geek, or it did until I found a life with my dogs, knitting, a house...
College
In college I focused a lot more on extracurricular activities (both official and unofficial ones) than on academics. If I had a do-over, would I do it differently? Dunno. I sure learned a lot about a lot of things from my involvement in student government and charitable and educational organizations. But there have been plenty of times, especially earlier in my career, when it would have been nice not to have to explain a GPA below a 3.0 ;)
Workplace
I'm a research editor for the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit think tank, where I edit documents for publication on everything from national security to water quality to health care and everything in between. I love the variety and constant learning, the people with whom I work, the environment...pretty much everything about this job!
