Lisa's Story

Short story: Moved to CO after college, married 21 years to miserable first choice. Lived in FL, NJ,CT, had 2 sons, taught 27 years. Divorced 10 years, remarried, retired, moved to VA. Spouse has grandchild; she may be the only one we ever get. Naturally, she's the cutest, smartest, and best dressed child in the world! Health could be better, but generally very content. Travel at every opportunity! Love to cruise: it's so easy! Life is good! For those who are still in the QC: The Walzem family presents the work of artist and painter Charles Walzem at MidCoast Gallery West in Rock Island, Illinois Charles Walzem lived for the pleasure of putting on paper his interpretation of the world around him. Much of his art is inspired by images captured on camera during his travels in this country and the Far East. A view among buildings in downtown Chicago, orchids in a garden, a room in a South Korean home or a view of a country storm are a few of his subjects, along with a handful of playful recreations of some imagined absurdity. Flying hats? And is it an oversized life form or a flaming orb? These images are among a sample of 35 original works of art, dated 1984 to 2004, that will be on display at Gallery West from November 10, 2010 through December 29, 2010. Charles favored gouache paint, a media heavier and more opaque than water color and with greater reflective qualities. Gouache is found in most of his work on display at Gallery West. rs, and reliefs. Born in Rock Island, IL, Charles recognized his passion for art at an early age. He was shaped by the culture of the 1960s, graduated from Alleman High School in 1969, and honed his painting skills while acquiring bachelors and masters degrees in art. Chuck took part time jobs and worked only enough to cover living expenses and art supplies and to allow maximum time behind a brush. To provide a reliable income, Charles obtained an education degree and joined his father, William “Buzz” Walzem in the teaching profession. With this third degree he traveled to Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China and taught English as a second language, from 2001 through 2008. The influence of these eastern countries is present in many of his later works. Chuck lived in the Quad Cities for much of his life and during the months between teaching seasons. He unexpectedly died in November 2008 at the age of 57 while returning from teaching in China. He left behind over 1,000 works of art. We invite you to the Opening Reception of Charles Walzem’s work at the Gallery West in Rock Island on Friday, November 12, 2010. You won’t see Charles at the gallery, but you are likely to be greeted by his parents, Buzz or Barbara Walzem, or one or more of his eight brothers and sisters. We hope you enjoy his work as we do. Charles Walzem’s work can be seen and enjoyed at the MidCoast Gallery West at 2nd Ave, RI, IL from November 10, 2010 through December 29, 2010.
