Lisa's Story

Life During college at MCC, I met my husband. We were both in the education program but things changed. After doing my student teaching at Marcos, I decided I would not be a great teacher and decided to finish up my degree in comparative literature instead. My husband decided to go into the Army via the ROTC program at ASU. This is probably a shock to all of those who knew me since I was known to be anti-establishment and yet, I married an Army officer. It has been an interesting life. We have moved over 14 times in 19 years! We started our military career in Germany, where my husband deployed to Iraq for Operation Desert Storm. I basically got thrown into the Army life head first (in a foreign country). Since then we have been moving around the states until 2001, where we again moved to Germany. We lived there a year and a half before my husband got deployed to Iraq (again). This time, he was in Iraq for more than 15 months! It was defintely a difficult time and a different war. We love living in Germany. Although I must say this time is different than 15 years ago. Attitudes have changed a lot and with Germany not participating in the conflict, there were a lot of demonstrations and such against Americans. We are moving to the states as I write (2004). It has been interesting living the life of a military spouse, but definitely not for everyone. My husband is currently a Lt. Colonel (2008) (prom...Expand for more
otable), Colonel in the near future; which means a lot more responsibility for me as well. As of current (5/08), my husband just left about a month ago on his third deployment to Iraq (1+ years). Hopefully, this will be his last deployment and we will retire from the Army by 2011. During all the traveling, packing and unpacking, I have been employed by Intel (as a public relations rep)and The Gillette Company (as a sales rep). I loved working! It has been a while though; difficult to find a job when you move every 1-2 years. I am taking a break on work (as I did in Germany) until my kids get through high school (currently have a boy in 11th grade and a girl in 9th grade). They are great kids and unbelievably adaptable! Well, there you go, a little synopsis on what has been going on in my life since high school. School Started out at Northern Arizona Univeristy for only a semester. Took a year off school and then entered Mesa Community College (where I met my husband). Graduated with an AA and then went to Arizona State University. Studied in the College of Education and went all the way through to my student teaching (at Marcos), then decided I didn't want to be a teacher and I was NOT good at it! At that point, we moved to Germany and I finished up my degree with the University of Maryland, European Division. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English/Comparative Literature and a minor in Social Sciences.
