Lisa's Story

Life After graduating from the University of Iowa, I moved to the suburbs of Boston for a year, and then I joined the Peace Corps and went to Thailand for two years as an English teacher. I returned to the US, moved to DC, interned for Senator Harkin for about five months and found a job as a clerk in a small law firm. I started law school at American University in 1996. I graduated in 1999, having focused on international law. I then essentially became a paper pusher in a couple of jobs that did not interest me much. I opened my own office in September 2001, and mainly served as court-appointed counsel for children and the indigent. I also served as guardian ad litem for a number of children in abuse and neglect ...Expand for more
cases, or custody and visitation matters, where I would advocate for their best interests. I returned to school in 2002, working full time and studying full time. I received my MA in international education from George Washington University in DC in May 2004. I moved to Afghanistan right after graduation to work for the Academy for Educational Development to coordinate teacher training and capacity development. I then started working for Save the Children to manage and support health, education and child protection projects, and just reached my five-year anniversary for living in Afghanistan (which I never thought or planned to reach). I am looking to move countries, but still stay in development/humanitarian work.
