Life
I have two wonderful children. Sarah is 22 and soon to graduate from high college. She is smart and beautiful and a talented saxophone player and poet. Robert is 13 and in seventh grade. He plans to be an engineer. He is a big time gamer.

I am a professor of microbiology. I do research on bacteria that cause illness in humans. I am particularly interested in environments that serve as reservoirs of these bacteria, like beaches on the Great Lakes, and in ...Expand for more
questions like how did they get there, how long do they last, what are the interactions between various microorganisms, can they exchange genetic information, can new disease-causing strains develop in these environments? If you've heard about beach closings and bacteria in sand, could be my research you've heard of. Right now we are doing a study to see if border collies can be used to keep gulls from public beaches.
I interact with many other microbiologists in the Great Lakes region and nationally and I train a lot of students.
In the classroom I teach introductory microbiology, biotechnology, medical microbiology, and conservation medicine.
