Lois Jean's Story

After Sheboygan North High school, I attended Marquette University and became a Dental Hygienist (for over 30 years.) Left Wisconsin upon graduation for California finally settling in Marina del Rey to enjoy tennis, scuba diving, camping, fishing, back packing, biking, and cross country & downhill skiing--all at your fingertips in California. Also participated in square dancing, Sweet Adelines, Community Choirs, taught CPR, was a hospice and children's dental clinic volunteer, took numerous night school classes and finally found the love of my life in Handbells. Since my two children have not blessed me with son or daugher in laws or grandchildren, I found that I could get my fill of kids activities by working in music at church. When retired to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1991 I found a church that needed not only handbells but a children's music director--I ended up with 5 bell choirs and three children's choirs with over 125 participitants in the last Christmas program in 2000. I sewed hudreds of costumes for the kids programs, vests for the bell choirs, Halloween costumes, old fashioned Carolers' outfits, and ever so many numerous pro...Expand for more
jects around my house and for friends. I slowed down after that when health problems (breast cancer and back & knee problems--and my husband's heart condition) caught up with us. This year we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary, Bill's 80th Birthday, and of course you know I'm as old as my classmates are. We've had lots of company since we moved to Las Vegas...and my two children, my brother and my husband's sister moved here too. Still hear from friends from grade school, high school and college days...so many great memories. Now I'm hearing from the third generation of kids who started out in my church choirs. It's a joy to know that they got so much from partcipating in church music when the schools cut back on those programs. I've recently started going through all the VHS tapes we made, recording them to DVD's--the reception has been worth all the hours I put in. Of course, Bill and I have been thrilled to look at all of it and remember all those great times. We indeed lived in the best of times and enjoy reliving them with everyone. To all of you raised in the 50's--Cheers. Lois Jean (Soronen) Castle January 2010
