Lois's Story

Well, 43 years later and here I am looking back on my senior year at Har-Brack, the friends and the experiences that are sweeter and sweeter to me and hope to connect with those I knew and see what path they have taken. For the past six years I have lived in the Baltimore area and work for the University of Maryland Medical Center as a Sr. Project Manager in the Facilities Project Development Department. But this is not where I started and, really did not know that I would do the work that I am now doing. After graduation I married , have three sons who have given me six grandchildren. However I always had the desire to go to college and in the 80"s I started to take classes; my dream was to be a lawyer. In the late 80"s I decided to explore my dream and enrolled at Pitt in the Legal Studies program with the hope that I would go on to law school. Well life took a turn, I left Pitt after two years when a family tragedy occurred; took sometime to re-access and was encouraged to study Interior Design. So in 1991 I enrolled at La Roche College in the Interior Design Program and began this journey. My interest are so varied, but I always loved architecture and design, feeling it helped define a people and a culture of a specific time which in turn helped me understand this world we live in and how we became who we are. However after much thought I realized that I was captivated by the interiors more than the exterior. I embarked on this course of study knowing that if this did not feel like a good fit, I would not continue after a semester of classes. Well, I fell in love and experienced an awakening of what is now and has been a pas...Expand for more
sion. However, I have also been and still am interested in construction, since this is what takes and idea and brings it to life. For thirteen years I owned and ran my on design firm and employed several designers. Our work was varied and included high end residential homes, universities, country clubs, law offices, healthcare environments and new buildings from ground up. In 2005 my business had taken it's third down, by this time I was a one woman show and decided to look for employment with an architectural firm in or around Pittsburgh. After that failed, I set out on what I refer to as an adventure to see what opportunities may be out there for me. After eight months of countless interviews in and out of the state I accepted a Senior Project Manager position at a architectural firm in Baltimore. My first job was a year long project with the University of Maryland Medical Center which led me to make the transition 13 months later in 2007 to the position I hold now with the Medical Center. I have found away to impact the interior environment for our patients and care givers by working with A&E firms on the design and with CM/GC's on the construction side. It is the most intense environment to work in since you are building for the most part, around patient units. However the satisfaction you gain from the end result counteracts the pain of the process. My goal is to get back to Pittsburgh, which I consider my home even though I was born and raised in Maryland for the first six years of my life. But for now I am happily a transplant here in Baltimore and continue to support the Steeler's in a very hostile Raven's territory.
