Lonnie's Story
Here is "my story" as shared by one of my advisees and provided to me as my own:
"The Mark of a Man"
(a tribute to Lonnie Bonham at his NSU recognition as the National Education Association's Student Program Advisor of the Year during American Education Week 2004)

The strength of a man isn't seen in the width of his shoulders; it's seen in the width of his arms that encircle and protect you.
The strength of a man isn't in the depth of his voice; it's in the gentle words he whispers.
The strength of a man isn't in the word he speaks; it's in how he keeps his word.
The strength of a man isn't on the hair on his chest; it's in the heart that lies within his chest.
The strength of a man isn't in the weight he can lift; it's in the burdens he can carry.
The definitive work of a man's life is not spoken by his words; rather it is the fruition of the work he has done and the lives that he has touched along the way.
Today, it is my honor to pay tribute to a man that meets all of these criteria. This man has a deep and profound love for education, and for those who will be the future leaders in our society. It has been said that one man cannot change the world; however, we all know that this is not true. With a passion and a vision for what he thinks pre-professional teacher education candidates can do, he has truly changed the world one student at a time.
If you haven't realized, or you can't figure it out yet whom this person is that I'm talking about, that's "ok" because he will never take credit for all of the hard work that he does,a ma...Expand for more
n who characterizes himself as "kitchen help." Today, it is time to give this man his due.
We all know that to teach is to touch lives. If he had known that I would stand before you and say these words about him, he would certainly not approve of the attention. His satisfaction is personal. He gains that satisfaction from seeing the people whose lives that he affect have an enhanced opportunity to be successful. He measures his own success by his undaunted advocacy for us.
Lonnie Bonham has touched the lives of many who have passed through NSU's School of Education and many more outside of this institution of higher learning. During this time that we are celebrating American Education Week, it is only fitting that we honor a nationally recognized champion of education whose roots are right here with Norfolk State University.
So, Lonnie Bonham, Thank you!
Thank you for being an advisor. Thank you for being a mentor. Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for being a colleague. Most importantly, thank you for being the Student Virginia Education Association's Number 1 Fan and a champion for public education.
I can truly say that Lonnie Bonham has helped to make me a competent, compassionate, cooperative and committed leader. We all know that this strong man's work is never done; but today we pause and simply say, "thank you." So, Lonnie Bonham, on behalf of the NSU School of Education and this nationally recognized chapter of the more than 900 National Education Association's Student Program affiliate chapters with more than 66,000 members, we say, "thank you."
