Lori's Story

Life I was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1967. My family and I shuffled back and forth from Chicago to Escanaba, Michigan until I was about 9 years old. My father built our home in Soo Hill, Michigan. Although, it burned to the ground in January 1977; I was in 4th grade at the time. It was very traumatic. Our family split up and lived with a variety of family and friends for a short while. Then we moved into a 2 bedroom trailor, while friends and family pulled together and helped rebuild a new home over the very same foundation. My parents separated in 1982 and my mother moved our family to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1983. After I graduated in 1985, my boyfriend moved to San Diego, California. Later that same year, I went to visit him for a couple of weeks and decided to make San Diego my home as well. We married in 1986 and had our first child, Kristen. In 1989, we had our second child, Joshua, and decided to move back to Cincinnati to raise our kids around family. I attended Southern Ohio College in Fairfield, Ohio and in June 1992 I received an Associate Degree in Accounting Technology. Then I returned to school, attending Wilmington College in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in December 2000 I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting. My husband and I separated for a time in 2001, but we later reconciled and moved our family south, to Louisville, Kentucky, where we purchased our first home. We have been married 20+ years now. I work for a small company in Louisville, KY as an office manager. Our oldest child, Kristen, graduated in 2004 and started college Fall of 2004. Our youngest child, Joshua, is a junior in high school. Time seems to pass very fast and passes quicker with each new year. So far, we've been pretty fortunate in life. We have our health, our family and friends. What more does one need? School I began my school days in Soo Hill, MI, attending Soo Hill Elementary School. I don't have a very good memory of those early days, but I do remember kindergarden. I remember playing with baby dolls and those red cardboard blocks, having arts and crafts and tasting Elmer's paste, it was kind of minty. I remember pouring Elmer's School glue on my hands, watching it dry and then peeling it off like it was a second skin. 1st grade was a blur and I barely remember 2nd grade there in the same school, but I remember my class was in the old building. I attended third grade in Chicago, Illinois. My brother and I used to walk to school and after school we would go to the YMCA for Brownies and Cub Scouts. I remember 4th grade real well. It was back in Soo Hill, I was in Mrs. Denman's class. It was the year our house burned down; that really sucked. My mother sent us to a Christian School in Gladstone, Michigan for 5th grade and part of 6th grade. The school and the people were nice, but I really missed my friends. I was able to finish 6th grade with my old friends at Webster Middle School. 7th grade, was the year I cut all my hair off. What a mistake!!!!! 8th grade I got my first perm and that was worse than cutting off my hair the year before. 9th Grade was my favorite year of school. It was first year of High School and I hung out with my older brother, Alan and his friends a lot. Alan was a senior that year. I worked on the homecoming float and met a lot of new people. I went to many football games and sang in the chorus. 10th grade was ok, but different. My brother's girlfriend was my best friend back then. She took me to my first real party. I had my first beer at that party. She also helped me attain my first drunk and ha...Expand for more
ng over. I received my driver's license summer of 1983. Then, I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio - against my will, I might add. I finished school in Cincinnati and was glad to be done. College I started college in 1990 to try to better myself and help provide for my family. I worked full-time and attended night classes full-time. It was hard, but I had a lot of support from family and friends. I graduated in June 1992 with an Associate Degree in Accounting Technology. Afterwards, I attained a better job, but nothing in my field. Later in 1994, a bookkeeping position came up with my employer, that allowed me to work in my field of study. However, due to the company restructuring in 1996, I took on a position with a new employer, working in accounts payable. My boss turned out to be a great mentor to me. She talked me into going back to school for my Bachelor Degree in Accounting, which I did by taking evening classes once again. Balancing a full time job, school with full load of classes, family and friends was mighty difficult. Without the love and support of my family, especially my husband, and friends, I could never of finished school. I graduated December 2000 with my Bachelor Degree. Thanks to all for your love and support. Workplace I began working at age 16. My first job was with Burger King and I worked for them for nearly 3 years. When I moved to California, I worked for Burger King for about a week, then got a better offer from Toys R Us. I worked for Toys R Us for only 1 or 2 months. Then I received an offer from Standard Brands Paints, which was the job I really wanted to begin with. I worked for them for 2+ years and the managers took me under their wings and helped me with many aspects of my life including my wedding. I got married had the first of two children, made a few real bad judgement calls and became a stay at home mom and child care giver. I soon found out that staying home wasn't all it was cracked up to be. I was bored, so I went back to work, but only part-time, working for Ginger in Ginger's deli. Ginger was wonderful, like a mother figure for me, especially since mine was back in Cincinnati. I had my 2nd child in 1989 and we decided to move back to Cincinnati to be near family. I took a few of part-time jobs like Sears, Service Merchandise, A-mold, Accounting Temps, GE and in home child care. Then I decided to go back to school. After graduating from Southern Ohio College in 1992, I began working for Hook's SuperX, which later became Revco Presciptions by Mail, now known as Pharmacare. After their restructuring began, I quit and found a job with CAE Ransohoff, where I learned many things from many people, but mostly from the company Controller. She was an inspiration and a mentor. She left an everlasting impression in my life. I left Ransohoff in late 2001, after moving to Louisville, KY and began working for Varitech, Inc. I'm still with Varietch, Inc. I am the company's office manager, which means I do a lot of everything. I work with a group of wonderful people. Here in Kentucky people make you feel like family. It's a wonderful feeling. I don't see me looking for a new job anytime in the near future. Military Actually, I've never had the opportunity to serve our country in any military field of service. However, I want to say thank you to each and every person who has ever served in any branch of our U.S. Armed Forces. What you do and have done to help preserve our daily freedom's here in the U.S. and for those abroad is admirable. Thank you! May God bless you and your family.
