Emily's Story

My story? Let me see... After high school, I went to UCDavis for a year, hated it, and transferred to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo where I thrived, dated a lot, took classes like Tractor Maintenance in addition to classes in English and Drama. I surprised myself by not being married by the time I graduated, so moved to Southern California to do various jobs, re-met Chris Byal who was finishing school at Cal Poly Pomona. We moved to Berkeley and got married. I was recruited into the Counseling Psychology Grad program at CSUH Hayward, then began my career years. We were married for 10 years, adopted a baby boy, and got divorced. I worked for PG&E and ultimately directed their Employee Assistance Program during the pioneer years of EAPs. From there I shifted into generalist Human resources work. Was Director of HR for western & southern US for a sales company in Brisbane, Because of son I moved to Walnut Creek where the schools were better, and became Dir. of HR for a Pacific Telesis start-up during the first years after telcom deregulation. I elected not to go with IBM when they acquired the firm, and started working in San Francisco as Director of Staffing & Employee Relations for Pac Bell Directory. After the 1988 earthquake left me stranded across the bay from my son in Kindergarten, I transferred to Pac Bell in San Ramon where I could at least walk home if there was another bad earthquak...Expand for more
e. Also, on the night of the earthquake, a man I'd been dating for a few weeks left his job in Antioch, and drove into SF in the middle of the night to rescue me. How could I resist him when he asked me to marry him! I got my fill of unions when I worked in San Ramon as Director Labor Relations, Safety & Force Management. After I left I became a free-lance HR consultant. I traveled, trained, investigated, coordinated company moves to new cities/states:laying off at old location, hiring staff at new locations if employees didn't move with the job. I was interim HR Director at a number of companies & non-profits. I retired from my last job as Director of HR for Saint Mary's College in Moraga, and am now downsizing stuff I've collected over the years, gardening, reading, doing volunteer tax preparation for low income folks, traveling, going to yoga classes & the gym, and visiting friends & family. Husband Ken & I have 4 grown kids -- none of them biologically related to us -- but our kids just the same, and grandchildren too, like most of you I imagine. My husband just retired this year from 32 years as a PG&E power plant control operator. We've had a great life so far, and are optimistic about the future!
