Lorie's Story

David Brillinger and I have been married for 47+ yrs., we have 2 sons, one of whom died in 1988 of cancer. Our son,Matt is living with his wife, Carol and 3 children in Canada. He teaches English Lit. at Carleton Univ. in Ottawa. Our grandchildren are Julia, age 13 and twins, Mo and Cynthia, age 7. We now consider twins a "normal" thing, altho the parents were glad to start with one! We visit at least 3 times/year, and love going at Christmas time when we play in the snow with the kids. David is from Toronto, and we both miss winters and snow. After we were married in 1960, we moved to England where we lived for most of the 60's. We moved back to North America in 1970. I knew by then that I wanted to be a midwife, and went to Nursing School, then a Nurse-Practitioner program and finally a Nurse-Midwife program at UCSF. I had a wonderful career in a county hospital, a private practice with an OB-GYN, and finally with a hospital practice. I retired in 2002---it's too much to do 12-hr. shifts when one is over 60---I had to say "enough"! David teaches Statistics at UC Berkeley, loves it so much that "retirement" is not mentioned. He gives a lot of talks at meetings in great places, so we travel in the summer quite a bit. Two years ago, Norway and Sweden and then to Ottawa for family visiting. He enjoys working on environmental problems, such as global warming, calculating the risk of wild fires, and studying the changing migration of elk in Alaska. But t...Expand for more
he favorite part of his job is teaching the students at UC Berkeley We live in Berkeley, which is still a lovely place to be! the people are wonderful, the concerts, plays, etc. are great---but we also wonder about moving someday to be near the family. I was on the Berkeley Health Commission for 12 years, and I am on a City health committee which is looking at reducing health disparities between different racial and ethnic groups. I am also active in anti-war activities, and in supporting Palestinian children with the Middle East Children's Alliance which is based in Berkeley. I am presently (2008) active with the Grandmothers Against the War---a wonderful group. Look up <gawba.org> to see what we've been doing. David and I take a lot of walks along the Bay, and love looking at sea birds and the views of SF. We seem to be busier than ever these days, so our travels make a good break in which to catch our breath. My sister, Virginia Silber, died of lung cancer in March, 2007. It has been a really hard year since, because Gina and I were very close. (She lived in Oakland, next door to Berkeley.) I'm sure some of my classmates knew Gina. Her best friends from HS came out to visit when they learned she was ill---she kept friends forever! Her son, Adam, comes over regularly, and is a Junior at Cal State East Bay. He is a great kid, and we're glad we are close to him. Hoping for Peace, Lorie (Silber) Brillinger (Vote Obama in November, please!)
