Lorin's Story

Life Way back when - in another life - I had a full head of hair, was excessively skinny, had no girlfriend, and didn't have much going on in life. Life has pulled a 180 on me. I'm now approaching 40 (39 this year), have a pretty nice receding hairline, would like to take off about 20 lbs, am married with three boys, and generally am so busy that I can't keep up with everything. Spent 4 years in the Army after high school - went through military intel school (spare me the jokes...), went to airborne school and learned how to jump out of airplanes(again, spare me the jokes...). I served in the 82nd Airborne Division - loved it, then was recruited to 5th Special Forces where I ended up on a SOTA team (intel version of special ops teams) and got out as a sergeant(E5). Also got my pilots license along the way. I met my wife while in service, got out and went to school at Kirkwood Community College till ISU accepted me, and graduated with my BS in Electrical Engineering in 1995. (She got her Veterinarian degree in '98 and ISU Vet College picked her up on staff.) I started work with an industrial supply and engineering company (Fisher Controls) after graduation, and am still there today. Worked my way to mid level management with a window - and love almost every second of it. I do enough travel that it satiates my wanderlust, but not quite enough to upset the wife (too badly). Got heavily involved with the dirt track raci...Expand for more
ng scene (stock car) in 96, raced hobby stock cars for a while, owned a modified (~550hp, 1800lb car ==> dangerous fast). 3 years ago my 8 year old started racing go-karts (he's got an Italian imported hotrod), won track champion 2 times --> and I sold all my racing stuff. He's much better than I will ever be... I now own a Honda Goldwing LTD and love to motorcycle tour. I'm also into helping building custom bikes for guys (I help manage a custom motorcycle shop up in my neck of the woods... when the wife allows...) Had 3 great boys along the way, the 12 year old has Downs Syndrome (and quite a few autistic characteristics.) He's a pretty great kid, always in a good mood. The middle boy (8 yr old) is a racer with some serious potential (we had the national champion pull in to race us in his class - Kyle beat him soundly). The 3-year-old (Scotty) - well - we'll be on a first name basis with the local cops by the time he's about 13 or so. He's the wild child that most parents give themselves the Catholic cross over (Catholic or not). Anyway, that's my life in a nutshell. And I wouldn't trade a second of it. Lorin Miller Okay, life update 3 years later. I took 40 lbs off (down to 172lbs), feeling great, back to running again, and am seriously into flying now(enough so that I'm building my own plane now). Been flying for 3 years pretty solid now and am building a 170mph mid life crisis machine. 2 seat, all aluminum.
