Lorraine's Story

Thought I would go to college, but after a year at U of W, I decided to marry Terry in Germany before he left the army. Travelling turned out to be very difficult, Germany was not what I expected--not fun. After 6 months there, I came home & kissed U.S. ground. 1972 was not a good year for the economy. While attending Community College, I decided to learn typing (against my high school pledge not to be a secretary)& worked while Terry finished a degree as a draftsman. The best thing we did was move out of Seattle to Edmonds. There we had Rhode Island Red chickens, raised rabbits for meat & bred German Shepherd dogs, grew a huge garden. Got involved in organics, teaching community classes with Rodale press. The rental house was falling down after 7 years there ($105/mo!) so we finally moved to a real house in Arlington on 5 acres on the Stilly --where our well gave us nearly continuous grief for 17 years. We progressed! joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon)& witnessed a miracle with the birth of every child! 3 boys, then finally a girl. I loved it there even without the horses, despite the water problem but Terry worked so hard & travelled so far driving for the county, we couldn't insist he continue 6 miles out of town while coaching for youth football & holding 2 jobs. I gave up my lovely country life down that mile gravel road for the boys too--who needed part time jobs after school to start buying cars etc. We tightened our belts as far as possible, I started a real estate career & Hagen left on a mission. We lived in town in a decent neighborhood unti...Expand for more
l my 4 years as an agent paid off. By becoming a real estate secretary with a salary, we could buy a house in 1999 & get back to a lovely countrified neighborhood with unique common areas-- huge 50+ acres of pastures & 20 stall horse barn. I knew my daughter had to have the horses & I could only take care of 1/2 an acre of garden on my own. We were so fortunate to find all this just 2.5 miles out of town. My real estate broker position caved with the economy so I am pursuing my garden interests while Terry is on a fixed retirement income. My youngest son is out of the military (yes) & he & his wife are determined to stay in the area! It's wonderful to have them here. We have a Harley in the garage now, a new German Shepherd puppy named Sapphira and hope for grandchildren living nearby in the future. My oldest son is a massage therapist in Horshoe Bay Resort, TX & has big plans for a spa near the beach next summer. My middle son is a firefighter in Phoenix. The horses are still a huge part of our lives as Liza, 18 yrs, finishes high school & decides where she goes from there. I love the ocean beaches, try to take my vacations there each year. My concession to the economy: Chickens again! in case eggs go up to $10 each. I would have a greenhouse & a couple weiner pigs to raise in our barn out back as soon as possible. We have fuel storage & food stashed away. I feel for the people in the cities. Life is going to get much tougher soon. This veneer of civilization is sooo thin. When the country begins to crumble, the violence will escalate. Be prepared to defend your rights & property.
