Lorraine's Story

Life Being over 50 years old, I have a history that has given me joys and sorrow, laughter and tears. My first marriage, though ended in divorce, gave me two wonderful children, Michael and Michelle. Michael is 34 and believe it or not - still single. After graduating from Sanford University in Alabama and searching for that perfect job, he found his dream employment with the University of Idaho. Michelle, now 30, graduated from the University of Central Florida and now works in the health care field while her husband runs a commercial fishing fleet from Jupiter, FL. As of today, I have no grandchildren. Looking back on my life, I found Florida to be home the day after I graduated from high school. That move worked well for me since I then, for the next two years, attended the Indian River College - finishing my education at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. It was in my junior year of college when I married the man who would become the father of my children. We divorced after 28 long years. A few years after graduation, actually in 1973 to be exact, I joined the United States Coast Guard. After receiving my rank of Chief Warrant Officer, I finally retired in August of 2001 after 28 years. I also worked Part time in the Physical Therapy Department at a local hospital. I was one of the Business Managers of the Department. This allow me to place my children in the priviate school system. Now to go back - in 1993 my marriage was starting to decline - I was taking care of my mother who was dying of ALS - and with the help of friends and Hospice and alot of prayers I got through it. In 2000, I married a wonderful man only to lose him early in 2005 to cancer. The years he suffered were extremely stressful and heartbreaking for me but thanks to my close friends, I survived those terrible times. It's ironic what can be accomplished with friendships. In November of 2005, a Memorial Service was given by Hospice for all those in Hospice care that passed away during that year. I asked my friend to accompany me to that service. It was there, she introduced me to a ma...Expand for more
n she'd known for a few years. A man who'd lost someone important in his life - someone who passed about five days before I'd lost my husband. This man and I would often sit and comfort each other because of our losses. It didn't take too long before we realized we'd fallen in love. I knew my late husband had a hand in helping Tony and I find each other since he said he never wanted me to be alone and insisted I join various groups after his death to avoid the pitfalls of widowhood. Now, here I am almost two years after meeting Tony - celebrating our first year of marriage - a marriage I feel was made in Heaven with the help of my late husband, Jon. Being now retired, I still enjoy living in Florida and Tony (who is a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel) and I never search for something to do - something is always at our becking call and those little somethings keep us very busy. Some of the things we both enjoy is traveling. Also time spent with friends who belong to the same social clubs that Tony and I. Dancing is a big plus for us since we both love it so much. Small dinner parties have become a big part of our lives. Tony and I are so compatible that it actually boggles the mind. Our days are filled with fun and our night with love. Military I enter the US Coast Guard in August of 1973. I went to basic training in Cape May, NJ. After that to A school in Yorktown, VA. Then to my first duty station which was in Florida at the Palm Beach Inlet. Which was great for me. Over the years I was in Miami, Key West, CA, Wash DC, AL, CT. I could of never did this without the help of my mother who help me so much with my children. They never needed day care. My children were so lucky to have her and so was I. The Coast Guard was one big family - long hours with many rewards - happy endings when you told a family we found your love one after being lost at sea. But sometimes the endings are not the way we want them to be. The military made me a stronger person to deal with lifes ups and downs and I had my share of ups and my share of downs. I miss my days of being in the Guard!
