Louis's Story

Life Six months after graduating from high school I joined the Marines. I spent 5 years on active duty and made some great friends. Some of the best times in my life were spent in the military. Once I was discharged, I started job hunting and landed a job in the information services department at one of the largest wineries in the world. I got married in October of 2001 to a wonderful woman named Julie and moved back close to home to a little town called Hilmar. We haven't had any kids yet but we are enjoying our time together. We are in the middle of remodeling our house so things have been kind of hectic. It'll be worth all the trouble once it's done. Military I joined the Marines in Dec. 1992. I went to boot camp at MCRD San Diego for 13 grueling weeks. After graduation from boot camp it was off to MCT for a month of weapons instruction and lots of hiking. After finishing MCT I was off to Mare Island in Vallejo CA. I...Expand for more
t was great because I was only 100 miles from home. I was able to go home on just about any weekend. My favorite memories are from the last months I spent there. There were 2 courses I had to go thru and it took over a year to complete my training. I got to Mare Island as a Private and left as a Lance Corporal. Upon completion of my training schools I was shipped off to Okinawa Japan. I wanted to stay in CA but it wasn't my decision to make. I find it funny that I had never left CA in my life and the first place I go to is a foreign country. After spending a year in Okinawa I was shipped off to Camp Pendleton, CA. I spent 2 1/2 years there and was honorably discharged in Dec of 1997. I got out as a Corporal, which I thought I would never achieve considering promotions were slow in my field. I made many friends while I was in the service and I wish I would've kept in touch. I'm trying to make amends for that now. Semper Fi
