Louise's Story

Writer Nine novels under the belt and working on number ten. Living in Dunkirk, Maryland in Calvert County. February 4, 2012. Haven't posted on movies in a while. Forgive typos, typing without glasses. :) The Artist - I ADORED THIS MOVIE. GO SEE IT. This is the black and white silent movie. Silent movie star refuses to accept the introduction of talkies and becomes a has been. You'd be amazed how much you can enjoy a movie with no sound and very few subtitles. Uggie the dog is in this one. Same Jack Russell terrier that was in Water For Elephants. He is adorable. This deserves the Academy Award for best picture. You will never see the likes of this again. 10 of 10 Underworld Awakening - Let me start out by saying that I'm not an Underworld fan, and Robert Pattinson is a lot better looking than Kate Beckinsale. Sorry hubby, had to go there. This wasn't bad. The most bloody of all the Underworld movies, or so I have been told. I did particularly enjoy Beckinsale shoving a grenade into the super-sized werewolf and watching him explode into a billion pieces. It was all I could do not to laugh. If you are an Underwold fan you will enjoy this one. Me? Meh. 6 of 10 Contraband - Wasn't sure that I was a fan of Wahlberg, but this was pretty good. Nice little caper movie. 6.5 of 10 Lady in Black - First movie out of the gate for Harry Potter. Wasn't bad. Too many cell phones and chatting teen potterites. This one will make you jump. Not gory, just suspenseful. Good ending. 7 of 10 I Am Number Four - Twilight meets Alien. Couldn't take this one seriously. 5 of 10 Thor - This one was okay. Holes in the plot were annoying. Why didn't he just call to his hammer instead of entering the government compound to retrieve it? 7 of 10 Water for Elephants - Loved this good old fashioned movie. Nothing gets blown up, no special effects, just the mystery and magic of a big top. Age-old love triangle with Jacob, Marlena and crazy-assed August. Hal Holbrook's cameo alone is worth the price of admission. Almost too late to catch it in theatres. Rent it. 8 of 10 The Consipirators - Anyone who grew up in Clinton has no good excuse for missing this one. Its done very well with story line and acting. James McAvoy is always good. Interesting use of light in this film. 8.5 of 10 Lincoln Lawyer - Ah, Matthew McConaughey in a serious role, and he is terrific! Grubby lawyer finally draws the line between money and integrity. This was a quality film. Its too bad it didn't get more attention. Like Water for Elephants and The Conspirators, it is a serious, adult movie that is intense, entertaining, and obviously well crafted. More of these and less Transformer movies please. :) 8 of 10 Source Code 8 of 10 Your Highness (okay, I owed a favor) 2 of 10 Adjustment Bureau 8 of 10 Get Low 8 of 10 Never Let Me Go 7 of 10 Gnomeo and Juliet 4.5 of 10 The Eagle 5 of 10 Season of the Witch - Don't go there unless you really have to. Bad script, bad acting, and cheesy (bring crackers). Rent Van Helsing instead (but ony if desperate, lol). 4 of 10 That's a wrap for 2010. My favorites: drama: The Kings Speech, The Ghost Writer, and Remember Me comedy: REDS and Pirate Radio animated: Despicable Me The King's Speech - This is the one to see. It has Oscar Best Picture all over it. Colin Firth stars as King George the V1 of Britain who hires a coach (Geoffrey Rush) to help him with severe stammering. When George's brother, the King, abdicates for the love of Wallis Simpson, George must ascend the throne. There he is faced with rallying the British people through radio broadcasts during WW11. I was suprised at how funny this film was in parts. Possible Oscar nods for Firth and Rush. Trust me, if you go see it, you will love it. Not very often anymore that I hear a theatre applaud after a movie. 8.75 of 10 Black Swan - This psychological thriller is well worth seeing. Natalie Portman stars as a ballet dancer who finally gets her break, but may not be able to handle the pressure. I could see her earning a Best Acting Oscar for this role. Mila Kunis adds an interesting, evil twist. 8.0 The Tourist - It's nice to see Johnny Depp playing a normal person for a change. I'm growing tired of all his "freak" roles. Same goes for Angelina Jolie. Too many "powerful, secret agent type" characters. Movie is enjoyable, but come on Golden Globes, are you serious? 6 of 10 How Do You Know - Fairly innocuous romcom with Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. Not Reese's finest moment. If you have nothing else to do it's not bad. Looking forward to Witherspoon in the circus drama Water for Elephants in April. Check out the trailer, looks awesome! 6.5 of 10 Secretariat - This is a good movie, not great. It's a credit to the film that even though you know Secretariat wins the triple crown, you are on the edge of your seat rooting for him to win. I would have enjoyed it more if they had inserted actual film footage of the triple crown races. Still, what a magnificent racehorse. As I watched this movie I kept thinking back to where I was in June 1973, wow, such a long time ago! Class of '73ers can really relate. 7 of 10 Red - Now this is why they make movies! Action comedy with the likes of Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Mary Louise Parker. Oozes funny, pacing , and cleverness. When you see a quality film you know immediately. If you decide to go to the movies right now, make it this one. Best comedy I've seen all year. 8.5 of 10 Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - Congratulations Oliver Stone! You just couldn't stay out of the way of your own movie, could you? You know, you can rely on good acting performances to deliver a story. Shia LaBoeuf and Carey Mulligan gave strong performances, they are among the best of the new crop of actors. Next time please leave out the sweeping gestures. e.g., panoramic 20 second helicopter ride (what the ?), New York skyscrape, and the dance scene with the grandiose music. Oh yeah, didn't care for all the scientific diagrams on the screen that you probably thought were super cool, but went so fast nobody could read them anyway. This was the most self-serving, pretentious pile of s movie I have ever seen. Thank your stars, Oliver, for pulling this one out of the crapper for you. 6 of 10 Social Network - Worth going to see. Eisenberg nails his role as founder/thiever of Facebook. Deserves Oscar nod as he zones out of humanity to create the world-wide phenom Facebook. Jury is still out on whether Justin Timberlake can act. Look for Andrew Garfield's career to explode over the next two years as he takes...Expand for more
on the Spiderman role and others. 8 of 10 The Town - I have to give it to Ben Affleck. The guy is a good director and actor. The movie is a little violent, but justifiable for the story. Some lines lost in the heavy Boston accent.. A good movie like this is a pleasure to watch. 8 of 10 Easy A - A little disappointed in this one. Not really your typical teen movie. Emma Stone was good, and my that girl has some legs on her! Looking forward to seeing her take on the role of Spiderman's girlfriend. 6.5 of 10 Harvey - Classic black and white (thank GOD) Jimmy Stewart comedy about Elwood P Dowd (Stewart) who makes friends with everyone, gives them his calling card and invites them home to dinner. The one thing he can't give away is the 6 foot white rabbit named Harvey who accompanies him most everywhere. It seems Harvey is cramping the style of Ewood's sister who is desperately trying to marry off her daughter. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Rent it, no buy it. It's that good. 9 of 10 The Secret Life of Bees - This is such a great movie. Young girl (Dakota Fanning) runs away from her abusive father to find out about her mother who deserted her. Set in the early 1960s, this movie deals with Issues of equality, voting rights for Blacks and basic human decency. Queen Latifa, Alicia Keyes and Jennifer Hudson get to sink their teeth into great, non stereotypical roles. This movie has heart. 8 of 10 Vampires Suck - Pretty funny for a parody. If you haven't seen first two Twilight movies you probably won't get it. Twihards should enjoy it. What could be better than the wolfpack in booty shorts singing "It's Raining Men." 6 of 10 Inception - Keep your face out of your popcorn. The plot is a lot to keep up with. What is reality and what is not? Does it matter? If you liked Matrix you will probably like this. Better than Shutter Island. Could have used some editing in the last third, just a little too long. 7.5 of 10 The Box - Push the button on the box, you get a million dollars and someone you don't know dies. Sorry, I couldn't even finish this incredibly stupid, poorly acted pseudo-drama. Totally predictable and laughable. That's all I'm going to say. 1 of 10 (generous) Despicable Me - I loved, loved, loved this movie! Its funny, clever and original. Runs circles around Toy Story 3. Mr Gru adopts 3 orphans in order to steal a shrink ray from Vector (dead ringer for Bill Gates). Gru plans to shrink the moon with the help of his little yellow and blue minnions. The minnions are hysterical as a constant source of "free guinea pigs" for Gru. Make sure you see this one. One of the best animated movies I have ever seen. Go Universal Studio! It is a classic. 9 of 10 Twilight Saga Eclipse - 2D or IMAX? Okay, I just did both. It took me the second time to decide if I liked it. Guys, don't bother. No woman wants the extra baggage of a guy when she's trying to get her Jacob or Edward fix. Seriously! 9 of 10 Ironman 2 - I'm sure all the fan boys liked this one. I thought it was pretty awful. Frankly, Scarlett Johansson, I don't give a damn! 3 of 10 Toy Story - Decent for Disney. Not as much adult humor as I would have liked. A good way to say goodbye. 5 of 10 Ondine - This is very limited release with simultaneous On Demand availability. Colin Farrell is excellent, as always. Filmed in beautiful Cork, Ire. Fairy tale quality to this one as modern day drama is mixed with Irish-Scottish fable of the Selkie (creature living in seal form who can also take human form). Fisherman pulls up his net to find beautiful, ethereal woman in it. This movie had great potential but the dialogue was very difficult to understand with mumbling and heavy Irish brogue. 5 of 10 (for lost potential) Prince of Persia - There is camp and there is camp. This movie is neither. I guess Disney thought they could create another Pirates of the Caribbean. Nope, another Dumbo. 3.5 of 10 Its Complicated - Okay, I'm a little late to this one. Just couldn't get into the theatre to see it. Very funny movie. Divorced parents reunite and have a sexual fling while sneaking around children and a spouse. Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep have great comedic timing and chemistry. 7 of 10 Letters to Juliet - The Italian countryside and Vanessa Redgrave are the stars of this movie. Both beautiful. Redgrave is mesmerizing with her bright blue eyes and elegance. This is a sweet movie, liked the older and the younger romance. 7 of 10 Robin Hood - I came, I saw, I went home. Can't stand Russell Crowe and his ego. Zero chemistry between Crowe's Robin and Marian (Cate Blanchett). Battle at end was best part of movie, esp mounted soldiers streaming up out of the valley. Interesting graphics and music in end credits 5 of 10. Murderous Intent - On DVD. Murder mystery in an English boarding school. One student arrested for the murder of another, but is he really guilty? Gestalt, the Templars and a class play. Good one! 8 of 10 Runaways - Trucked all the way downtown for this limited release about the band the Runaways. Old Post Office Pavilion was interesting but a disappointing film. Story felt really thin. More Dakota Fanning than Kristen Stewart. E Street Cinema was cool. Refrigerated Junior Mints and an assortment of beer and wine. Alas, noon is a little early for me. 5 of 10. Date Night - Tina Fey and Steve Carell make a pretty good pair, a little funny, a lot average. 5 of 10. Dear John - If you have seen one Nicholas Sparks movie you have seen them all. Channing Tatum is interesting in his role, but Amanda Seyfried, although beautiful to look at, doesn't carry her weight in defending her character's actions in the final scenes. 5 of 10 Inglorius Basterds - Enjoyed this, Brad Pitt had a more limited role than I thought, but his Italian is hysterical. Tarantino blood as always. 7 of 10 Ghost Writer - Now this is a good one! Ghost writer for ex English Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) commits suicide, or does he? Limited release, you might have to hunt for it. Wouldn't be surprised to see this awarded come awards time. Polanski crafts a tight movie. 8 of 10 Alice in Wonderland- I'm so over 3D. Boring, ready to leave after 40 minutes. Depp added nothing to his repertoire. 5 of 10 Remember Me - DVD has one of the best director commentaries I have ever heard. Lighting, camera flow, this one has it all. Critics killed it at the box office. My favorite film of the year so far. If you don't feel like shedding a tear you have NO feelings. The impact of this movie will haunt you long after the end. Everyone should stop and consider the message of this film. Look it up! 8 of 10
