Louise's Story
Life
When I look back over my life, it appears I spent the first half of it trying to avoid being a pioneer like my ancestors, and the second half following in their footsteps.
So, what have I pioneered? Oh, lots of things, but to date, my "Andy-Warhol-15-minutes-of-fame" was launching the homeschooling movement in Canada on national TV. And, although I didn't coin the word "homeschool", I was the first person to use "homschooling" in print, in an article for a back-to-the-land magazine.
I had been a teacher/principal by profession, but my interest in homeschooling developed after I became a parent. The adventure caused way too much controversy in Manitoba, so I decided to move to Vancouver Island, BC where the climate was better -- speaking both of weather and schooling.
I never looked back. Yes, I loved raising my kids on 20 acres of beautiful prairie bushland in rural Manitoba. But I absolutely adored raising them here in Paradise on the banks of a pristine mountain river. I live on 5 beautiful acres of rainforest near Parksville, on Vancouver Island -- when I left Manitoba for Lotusland, I had no intention of ever returning.
Ironically though, after all this time, I have recently become very intere...Expand for more
sted in Manitoba. It started about four years ago when I began writing our MacDougall family history. My first problem was that I didn't know the history, so I had to find the MacDougall relatives and ancestors to find the history. This has been a great challenge, loads of fun, and IÂve met the nicest folk along the way.
Not surprisingly, the history project has grown a bit larger in the process. As a result I'm in the middle of creating "The Isle of Tiree Descendants in Manitoba" Archival Collection -- documenting the pioneer families from Tiree, Scotland who settled in Manitoba. My goal is to have this Collection ready in time for the Tiree Homecoming on the Isle of Tiree in May 2006. I'm looking forward to visiting Scotland for the first time then too. If you google ÂTiree Gatherings (with the Âs and the quotes) my website should appear as the only entry. Without the quotes, youÂll get mine and related ones.
Hmm, I guess my paragraph at the beginning needs to be revised to: the first third of my life, avoiding the pioneer syndrome of my ancestors; the second third, following in their footsteps; and the current third writing about them!
All in all, having a great time, and hope you are too!
