Louise's Story

Life I thought I HAD a bio here (?) Oh well! My husband, (of 38 yrs) Pete and I, have lived in Santa Maria, CA for 6 years. We actually stayed on the fringes of Antelope Valley while we raised our three beautiful daughters in the big town of North Edwards, CA, just across Hwy 58 from Edwards AFB. If you've never heard of it, it's 9 miles northwest of Boron and if you've never heard of Boron, it's just as well. You may ask, Why did you move so far out into the boonies? Well, I guess that depends on who is looking at it! Because, for the 32 years I lived there, I thanked God that I didn't live in Trona, Baker or Death Valley. (forgive me if that's where you live). AND, Pete got a job at U.S. Borax in 1969 and retired in 2004. USB was a good provider for us, even if we DID have to drive 45 miles to go shopping! We stayed pretty busy. Besides raising our kids, I volunteered for community projects, did the "soccer mom" thing; earned extra money (at Christmas;-) by using my limited artistic skills painting the local store windows with Christmasy pictures; and taught Sunday School and Bible studies. Then worked as an instructional aide for remedial math and reading for 13 years; wrote an "Irma Bombeck wannabe" column in the local paper for 6 years; belonged to the Muroc Community Theater for 10 yrs with my family (if you remember how painfully shy I was, THAT was a stretch); joined a writing club and ACTUALLY got a story published in a shiny soft-covered book! The last five years before we moved to Santa Maria, I was a SECRETARY in the finance dept at the EAFB. (So "THERE!" to the business dept at PHS that wouldn't let me major in business because I couldn't type with two hands!) I took typing at AVJC and learned to type with one hand, 35 wpm with no errors! Double that for 2 hands and I typed 70 wpm! lol! I know there's going to be certain types of people that argue with that logic, but it worked for me! I WILL say that if it weren't f...Expand for more
or the American Disabilities Act, I'd have never gotten a job on base. But I was good at my job! Okay, enough of that sassy behavior. In 1995, my body fell apart. Some of you know that I am a polio survivor. There's a "condition" called post-polio syndrome that hits many polio survivors. It goes like this... if you over-extend your muscles all your life, eventually, you may experience PPS, which will weaken your muscles extensively. I was hit pretty bad. My work was making it worse, so I needed to quit in order to conserve what muscles I had left. I was really bummed. Great News! All these years I've carried an incredible amount of guilt for being "bone" lazy! Now, I know that it was a GOOD thing because if I had NOT been lazy, I probably would not be walking today! Yes, I do still walk, altho' when I'm out 'n about, I use my power wheelchair. It isn't, necessarily, because I can't walk... it's more, because I fall down and can't get back up on my own! (Yes, I've heard the commercial ;-) My husband is an avid tennis player and golfer, so this area (Santa Maria) with great year-round weather is perfect for him. I love the green-ness and ever blooming flowers here. I still love the Lord, teach Bible studies, read, spend too many hours fiddling around with my computer and talk to my daughters on the phone. Pete and I spend 3 months in the summer in New Hampshire at our camp, visiting his family and playing on the lake in our little 17 ft motor boat. Nothing fancy. It is truly a God-thing that we have this blessing. I've been to FL, GA, WA, SC, and NM because that's where my kids have lived. My husband is wonderfully patient as he buzzes around with all his energy and I putter along at my snail's pace. Altho' we're equal at mind games, (Scrabble, etc ;-) so I keep him on his toes in that area! Oh, I have 10 grandchildren - 2 beautiful girls and 8 handsome boys! TOO MUCH INFORMATION? OKAY. Now you know the real me!
