Louise's Story

Louise Garrod Cooper was born February 1, 1917 in San Jose and passed away April 6, 2007 with family at her side at home on the Saratoga ranch where she lived. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, George Emery Cooper; her daughter, Barbara Louise Cooper of Pleasant Hill; her sons and their wives, William and Doris Cooper of Saratoga, James and Nancy Cooper of La Selva Beach, David Cooper and Kathi Hart of Foxfield, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; her brother and his wife Vince and Jane Garrod of Saratoga; sisters-in-law Edna May Garrod of Sacramento and Marjorie Bougher of El Dorado; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Vince (R.V.) and Emma Stolte Garrod, brother Richard R. Garrod, and life-long friend, Cecily Kyes. Louise was the eldest child of a pioneer Saratoga ranch family that played an important role in the agricultural history of Santa Clara Valley and California. After attending Saratoga Grammar School and graduating Los Gatos High School in 1935, Louise earned her BA (Public Administration) in 1939 at the University of California, Berkeley. There she met George Cooper, whom she married January 25, 1941 in the Saratoga Federated Church. r children. Louise directed her energy to family, education, and community. She was the first PTA President at Foothill Elementary, at Fruitvale (now Redwood Middle) School, 1957-58, and Saratoga High School, 1959-60; she also helped organize the Saratoga-Los Gatos PTA District and then served 16 years (1963-79) on the Los Gatos Saratoga Joint Union High School District board, three of them as President. She later became a board member of the West Valley/Mission Colleges Foundation and represented this board on the Olympiad of the Arts committee. For 45 years, Louise worked with the Saratoga Historical Foundation, which her mother helped establish in 1962. Louise served as its president for many years, often organizing exhibits, lectures, and fundraisers. She was honored as Citizen of the Year by Saratoga Chamber of Commerce in 1990. She was a member of AAUW, PEO, and the Saratoga Foothill Club. A public Celebration of Life was held Saturday, May 5, 3:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Foothill Club.
