Lowell's Story

Class of 1959. Has it really been 53 years! Since the times as cadet officers we used to harass the freshmen Aggies into thinking we were Aggie officers and nearly getting our butts kicked, lots has happened. Rather than try and detail it here, how about a long list of the things we treasure that seem to pass by too quickly. 1959, graduate, with a speaker like Gov Price Daniels giving the big send off, things went into high gear. College, at Sam Houston State Teachers college on scholarship, to create them a 'working radio station,' only to be disappionted when I was shoved into the Drama Department. Greek and Roman play history...zzzzzzzzz. I did parlay my military ROTC into a cool entrance in the USAF, and second seat in the famous F-104 Lockeed Starfighter (a rocket with stubby wings) a cow in a dogfight, but great at low level as I was straffing target control officer in the second seat till replaced by early black box computers and moved into Crypto, and lucky to get out of the service when we all laughed about one of our enlisted guys being sent to some place called Vietnam? Anyone who knew me at Allen might remember me tinkering with a small broadcast station at Allen. I had been a DJ since 1954, before Allen and after the USAF I got back in radio as a DJ in Oregon Radio and in two years was in the big time in LA as Johnny Knight and other aka's but most known later as DAVE DONAHUE. see: CRB.org and go to Hall of Fame. There my full career is listed as my peers honored me by induction into the RADIO COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME as a DJ in 2000. Along the way I climbed several mountians in Oregon and Washington, made over 80 freefall jumps out of a perfectly good running aircraft and made over 2500 hours of ocean dives as a professional instructor, master diver and owner of S E A. (Sea Exploration Associates) Pompano Beach-Florida Keys with contracts to raise sunken drug boats. I have been down in nearly everyt part of the Caribbean and still dive Mexico at my age. Next stop the Pacific and a trip to drink a little vino in Italy someday if I can ever recall the combination to my bank vault, or find a rich widow. I got married along the way, have a wonderful daughter who has been a firefighter for 25 years and a young son who gave all in Desert Storm. I lost him two years after he returned. It is the thing anyone with a family fears, but we live with it day by day. I was only married for 8 years and have never remarried. My career lead me many places working with nearly every star in music, movies and television including everyone from Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, and Olivia Newton John, to the Beatles, Elvis, Beachboys, Hendrix, Joplin, Sly Stone, Doors, Stones, to Johnny Cash, Waylon, Dolly, Mandr...Expand for more
ell, George Jones, Haggard and discovering Mickey Gilley by helping get him get his first major label gig with Playboy Records to name drop a few and had the honor to work at America's Legendary radio station, WSM, the Grand Ole Opry station in Nashville. I had several syndicated radio and television shows, "MUSIC CITY MONITOR" broadcast live from Opryland park, the ERNEST TUBB MIDNIGHT JAMBOREE, and TNN's "Wrap Around Nashville." I concluded fulltime radio on the air and as a broadcast consultant after my a dream job of Program Manager and air personality in the "sunny, never snows, dive, dive dive everyday" Florida Keys working for the famous Clear Channel Corp in shorts, T-Shirts and flip-flops!. Flew in Buffets s Lake Renegade amphibian seaplane and his goose (?) me thinks, I mainly remember I didn't step of a pop top, and the rest is foggy and srangely smells like margaritas. Today, I am still active owning my own media services, "Star Creative Media" and Star Music Recording Studios where I produce commercials doing VO (voice overs) for radio and Television. I specialize as a VOA (voice over actor) with about 50 character voices from 'The Duke" to Dracular, cartoon voices and about everything in between, two video game chacater voices are in the hopper for 2013. Two novels "RADIO'S REMARKABLE LISTENERS; The DJ DIARIES volume one and two is in editor stage at this time and hopefully will be out in time for Christmas. Those will be followed with, "BIMINI BLUE," Mainstream Literary Contemporary Adventure fiction, then "TORCH" Fiction Horror, "BRADFORDS BAYOU" a young adult series, with a television pilot script and several other projects that were on the back bunners for about 35 years. My Mom never understood when she said, "Son when are your going to grow up and get a real job!" Dad's only advice, "Son, do what makes you happy!" Its always great to be called an Allen Rat as some of the Bryan townies and Aggies thought the name was demeaning. My gosh, that was the first things a cadet officer called me, and it didn't take to long to figure out how to walk and talk the game, master the night study hall and love the greasy chesse burgers at the 'Hut.'. Finally, Will Daniels Jr. I will never forget you and I and two Texas beauty queens leading the Texas Governors Ball grand march, sleeping in the Gov's manson, taking the Governor's limo with 'Texas #1" tags to the A & W Drive-in and trying to pick up chicks! To top it all, being brought back to Allen by a Texas Highway Patrol Officer driving a high-pursuit 57 Ford with lights and siren going full blast, then us both being escorted into the main building in hancuffs. So a toast to Happiness and Health, the tops among the most treasured things in life. Lowell
