Lucia's Story
After high school, I went to UCDavis and got my degree in Anthropology. Suddenly realizing that I was about to graduate, I got a job at the library until I could decide what to do with the rest of my life. I got married in 1982, and followed my hubby to UCIrvine, where he worked on his doctorate. After 10 years in libraries, I figured I might as well get the degree. For three years, I worked full time at the Science Library at UCI, while I worked on my masters in Library and Information Science at UCLA. I graduated and got pregnant at the same time in 1995. When my daughter was about a year and a half, my husband and I both got full-time jobs in our careers ... in Texas! We lived in McAllen, Tx for almost three years, before the climate and the politics finally got to us. We returned to California in 2000. and such like at the libraries I worked at, but on my return to California, I had a difficult time finding anyone who needed my talents there, so I made a U-turn and became a children's librarian with the Los
Angeles Public library. That was an exciting year, in 2000 - we moved 3 times: Texas to Pasadena, Pasadena to Alhambra, Alhambra to San Jose - and in just over a year, I held 4 jobs: Cataloger for Hidalgo County, children's librarian at LAPL, technical services librarian at Pillsbury Winthrop, LLP, and finally as a children's librarian at San Jose Public Library. We've been in San Jose ever since, though, and my daughter is now in high school. My husband and I are both still employed (knock on wood), which I feel is an accomplishment in this economy, and I just saw my nephew graduate from Nordhoff as the valedictorian this year (2010)! I'm feeling pretty lucky overall :)
