Lucille's Story
Life
Bachelor's Degree from Univ. of South Carolina. Moved to Atlanta in 1988, married and divorced, one wonderful son. Working as Administrative Assistant in a physician's office for the past 20 years. Survived cancer - just celebrated 13 years! - and going strong. Ladies, I am a poster child for breast self-exam. If not for that, I would not be here. I had a warp-speed growing lump that went from undetectable in November when I had my physical to the size of a pecan (in the shell) by the end of January. I was just 34 and not even at the age for regular mammograms yet. By finding it when I did, I saved my own life. I had surgery immediately and chemo as a precaution, and I am better than new. ten. The more you check, the more familiar you become, and when something is there that shouldn't be you will be able to tell without a doubt. It could save your life.
School
School was a big fuzzy blur for me. I was so shy and insecure that I spent the whole time with my head down. I never thought I would fit in with any groups, and I was afraid to try and risk rejection. I find out years later that everyone thought I was stuck up, which couldn't have been farther from the truth. Oh, well, you can't turn back time and do it all over again, so I just try not to keep making the same mistake. I do wish I had tried harder in class rather than just floating through them as well. It would have been interesting to see where I would be now if I had.
