Lucy's Story

Hello Classmates and old friends, It has been great being able to reconnect with friends from the past, and to find out what has been going on in their lives after leaving good old Bassett High. After I graduated from Bassett, I attended Rio Hondo College and graduated from the LVN nursing program. I moved and worked in Montebello for an orthopedic private practice for many years. I managed the back office, and was also a limited X-Ray tech. I enjoyed it very much. I managed to stay single till I was 33. I was having too much fun being single and independent, and was strongly influenced by the women's lib movement at the time! I quit working to raise my two boys and became a housewife. I actually became my mother,(which I said I never would. Not that it was a bad thing, it was just that I swore that I would not become that domesticated!), becoming involved in my boys school, PTO member, room mother, team mom..the Whole Enchilada! Had to even trade in my 78 convertible VW bug for a van to participate in carpooling! We lived in Walnut during those years. Must say that I have no regrets for putting my career on hold. I have many wonderful memories of watching my boys grow up. They are now 21 and 25. I have been blessed, for they are great sons and we are very close. Marriage did not last and divorced in 2002. I moved to Covina Hills, and started my own business of interior decorating and faux finish painting. In 2002 I returned to Rio Hondo College to finish my AA. I took some other artistic classes, such as painting, vocal classes, theater and joined the college choir. I realized that I had a voice and a passion for singing and the theater. I was a sopra...Expand for more
no, and sung solos at our concert performances, and sang the National Anthem at the graduation ceremonies. We were even invited to sing at Carnegie Hall. Aside from having my children..that was one of the most memorable moments in my life. Bassett girl makes it to Carnegie Hall!... How about that! Oh and also had an opportunity to perform at Kodak Theater with the Jr. Philharmonic! I continue to sing, but more of Jazz, Blues, Classics, some rock and country. Etta James, At Last, is my favorite. I love to do Karaoke, do showcases and am still hired to sing at special events, weddings and other events. Would love to hook up with a band or trio, but don't think I have the time that is required to commit oneself. I moved to Northern San Diego County in 2006 to start my new business and seek a new change in my life. I started a senior relocation service, called Peace of Mind Senior Transitions. We assist seniors who are moving to a retirement community, with sorting, downsizing, packing, moving, and resettling. I have always had a passion for seniors and love working with them. I love it here and can honestly say that I now call this my new home town. I am happy to say that Diane Santellan (Casteneda now) is still by best friend. We have seen our children grow and continue to enjoy the memories of growing up in Bassett. We still argue as to who got who to start smoking...it was her! Other than the reunions, I have not seen anyone. I look forward to another one in hopes of seeing familiar faces again and sharing fun memories. I wish you all the best and hope that life has been good to you. I look forward to hearing from my classmates. God Bless, Lucy Ontiveros
