Lydia's Story

What have I been doing? That question brings me back to the start of that question, attending Waukegan High School. I have many fond memories of people when I think of that period. I had some fun times, and really cared for some of those I met. It was for me though not a good fit. I needed something more artsy and philosophical. So much of it seemed shallow to me, leaving me feeling very alone in my thoughts. Some of my skipping classes involved sitting in Powell park writing poetry or the downtown library reading books out of their stacks. Moving out-of-state so quickly after graduation set me on a course independent of most connections. Life became busy and I didn't spend much time looking back. At this point in life I have become a bit cuious I must admit, about how life turned out for others who shared in that Waukegan beginning. I moved around a bit after high school. I lived in California, Virginia, Washington D.C., and then back to several places in IL, the last being twelve years in Richmond. In that time I raised six children, home-schooling my three for a number of years, and gaining three stepchildren along the way. Six teenagers at once! At least I have proven to not be faint hearted. This spring will mark thirteen years living in the foothills, (mini-mountains) of eastern Wa on thirty wooded acres. Dave and I built our house almost entirely by ourselves. I even helped raise the walls with walljacks. For several years we travele...Expand for more
d back to Il for the summer months where Dave worked as an electrician and I painted and worked with children's programs for a park district. Dave is now retired so our visits to Il are filled with more time with family. I am am artist, working mainly in oils. I paint many subjects, with commission work usally being portrat. I love walking in this beautiful place, watching and talking to our many animal visitors which include deer, turkeys, moose, and the occasional bear. We had one of those on the front porch with his nose to the screen checking out the dinner smells. Other pleasures include exploring varied creative endevors. Recently, fiber arts, including quilting and stichery have caught my interest. I like the connection to the past interwoven with the contemporary. I love to read. Subjects range from theology, spirituality, philosohpy, history, health/nutrition, art, and fiction now and then. The mind/ body/ spirit connection is vital to me. I include exercise and trying new recipies in the mix. Now and then I dabble in writing. I would like to spend more time on that. My greatest joy is my family which includes eight grandchildren. They are beautiful, each with their own gifts to offer the world. Our visits are the highlight of my year. I enjoy my friends. I have moved so much over the years that I have lost touch with many of them. I find it interesting to hear what they are now doing. There are some surprises out there for sure!
