Lynn's Story

As many of you know I moved to California in 1972. I came back to visit in 1973 and haven't been back since. I did laugh to hear that some people thought that because I lived in California I had dyed my hair blonde, surfed and lived on the beach. Not this girl! My first job here was working for an insurance agent in downtown Los Angeles as a file clerk. What a culture shock it was for me to come from Pemberton to LA. I told people that I hadn't fallen off the turnip truck but instead had driven it to California! I got married and we moved to Long Beach (still no blonde hair) and I went to work for a bank as a teller trainee and worked my way up to the loan department. After about two years of that I went to work as an animal health technician for a veterinarian that cared for exotic animals (alligators, snakes, monkeys, foxes, birds to name a few) as well as dogs and cats. The "city" life was getting too crazy for me and so my husband and I moved to Frazier Park, a mountain community north of LA. We were familiar with the area as we liked to camp there. I loved it (although I did not like the snow) but he liked the city life and so we went our separate ways. I stayed in Frazier Park for 15 years, remarrying and having my two children (Sarah - almost 29 and John - almost 27). While there I worked for a cattle ranch as an accounting clerk and then the schools as a teacher's aide so that I could be off when the kids were. In 1993 the kids and I came to Bakersfield as I was working here for Nestle Ice Cream in the safety department and Frazier Park was 55 miles away. With t...Expand for more
he road between home and work subject to closures (fog and/or snow in the winter and vehicle wrecks at any time) I couldn't have them stranded at home and my not be able to get to them. I left Nestle and went to work for an occupational doctor to see that side of workers' compensation. I then went to work for an asphalt refinery as a safety assistant. Unfortunately they filed bankruptcy otherwise I would probably still be there. After that I went to work for 5 years in a gasoline and diesel refinery as a safety supervisor. A little more than a year ago I was offered a position with an oilfield construction company as a safety specialist. The division that I work with does facilities demolition for Chevron Production. I love my job. I am not currently married, although I live with my boyfriend in a house that we purchased together at the end of last year. Both of my children are here in Bakersfield. My daughter, who is married, is a certified oral surgery technician and is getting ready to go back to school to become an RN. My son, who is single, currently works in the oilfields. I have one granddaughter (Kayde) who just turned 10 and sometimes acts like she is 40. All of my friends call her mini-me. I have another grandbaby on the way in December and we will find out on Aug 5th if it is a boy or girl. I think it is a boy and everyone else thinks it is a girl. This is the high spots as my life along the way has been interesting to say the least. I am looking forward to seeing any of you that come to the reunion in 2011. I can't believe that 40 years has almost passed.
