Lynn's Story

I hope old friends remember me as someone who listened, who was respectful of others, who could be trusted to keep my word. Actually, in all honesty, it is nice just to be remembered at all. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right.I loved it for almost 25years! I blow off steam by yelling, screaming, and pounding things. Actually, I work out, get outside, talk and laugh with friends, or listen to music. An occasional martini or scotch on the rocks is good too! I wasn't a wild child in school. I always looked guilty even when I was innocent, so I didn't push the boundaries much. On April Fool's day in 8th or 9th grade some friends and I caused a disturbance in a Spanish class. It really was pretty mild, but I spent the rest of the year seated in a corner. Miss DelFierro was angry. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have contact with people, some autonomy , laughter, and surprises to be able to deal with the day-to-day. Most important I have to believe in the work I do. I have many real life heroes. My dad, my immigrant grandparents, my mom. Anyone who works daily to provide for others inspires me. I have many heroes in the arenas of public education, labor history, and social justice. Thinking of them helps me stay motivated to do my best work. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is my dad who passed away 15 years ago, because he would be interested and delighted to learn what I have done with my life since we spoke last on this earth.. I'm pretty obsessed with my family and my work. I love my daughter's dog who used to live with us and still stays with us from time to time. She's the best listener, always eager to see me, and is a great workout buddy. Lily doesn't require me to act at all reserved. She's delighted when I'm off the rails with exuberance. My human companions are not nearly as understanding. I work way too many hours at my job as a Union Rep. now, and always spent too many hours working as a teacher. I can only say I have great respect for both professions and you can't achieve enough by working 9-5 in either of these fields. It would be awful if I didn't love the work and value the contribution both professions make to peoples' lives and to society at large. My biggest surprise is that I didn't retire from teaching. I always thought I would. To move to SE Washington after more than 24 years as a classroom teacher and to embark on a new career was a surprise to myself and to others who knew me at the time. I have never regretted the change, even though, I do miss teaching. I love my home.It is my sanctuary, but I also love to entertain family and friends here. We've been here for 25 years and it has been the backdrop for most of the precious memories of our family. The things I have learned from my daughter are too many to list. She's quite organized, pragmatic, and artistic. The most enduring lesson relates to the benefits of unconditional love. I am so glad to have been a parent, and especially to have been her parent. My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age would be old, sick, retired. I was so completely wrong and ignorant. Actually, I expected that I would be dead by now. It is a surprise to me that I have already lived too long ...Expand for more
to die young!. I love what I am doing now, and intend to continue as long I still love it and can make a difference. When that changes, I will retire. It will be a whole new adventure then. I will relish that time, as I have my work life. My best friend would tell you I'm passionate and exuberant, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as reserved, and thoughtful. Dear God. I hope I don't dress as I did 10 or 20 years ago. But, we usually, don't see ourselves as others see us, so I could be wrong! Even if I am "trapped in time", I know for sure that I don't wear the same size as I did one to two decades ago! The weirdest job I ever had was in the summer of 1969. Like every other college freshman hoping to return for a sophomore year of College, I beat the bushes looking for work to help pay college expenses for the fall. I ended up working for a truly crazy manager at a fast food chain from the mid-west at their new franchise in Renton. I was a cashier, and "counter girl". The job required me to wear uniform (a vest, a skirt with fringe in suffocating "pleather") complete with a cowgirls' hat. It was hell. The business was named Bronco's. It did allow me to get some experience with the National Labor Relations Board (hints of my union goon destiny). The boss was slimy and sexually harassed all the young women, and had all of us working below minimum wage. I filed a complaint. The rest is history ( in my own mind, of course :-)! I share my home with my husband, my cats, frequent house guests, and frequent large groups of family, friends, co-workers, I find that entertaining and having a busy and full home enriches my life, and builds wonderful memories. In my work bargaining and organizing on behalf of public school employees, I have several plaques and trophies, for organizing for a strike, serving as communications coordinator, or assisting others in the battle for fair salaries, benefits, and working conditions. They are called "Pro from Dover" awards. Does that phrase mean anything to you? In my previous life as a teacher, I received a number of special awards for instructional and extra curricular excellence. My proudest award was from the 9th grade class of Meridian Junior High in Kent. In 1984 they elected me "Teacher of the Year"! That award still hangs in my office, and was the greatest validation I have earned for doing work I have always loved. My one do-ver would be the opportunity to be a kid all over again and for much longer next time around. I began taking on pretty adult tasks at the age of six. I was fairly serious utnil well into my adult years. I take life less seriously now. My next go round would be much more light-hearted, and "juvenile"; Once you are an adult, you can't really go back. In 10 years, I hope to be retired with at least two grandchildren at my knee. I'm going to get there by Getting plenty of rest, excersizing daily, taking Geritol and antoxidants daily to insure I live another decade. The two grandchildren is trickier. I will probably have to find a black magic artist to cast a spell on my daughter and my son-in-law who are adamant they will have one and only one child, when they are ready. Yikes! . My first job was at Center Clothing, where I got paid $1.30 to wrap gifts. What I remember most about it is I loved having my own money!.
