Lynne's Story

LIFE I have retired! From 1963 thru 1978, I lived in 5 different countries, 10 different locations and 18 different houses. From 1978 to the present (2012), I have lived in the same town in Illinois but in four different homes. It’s really weird to realize I have lived in one area for so long. My family and I spent the years from February 1971 to March 1975 (mostly) in Dacca, East Pakistan/Bangladesh (except for 3 months in Bangkok, Thailand and 6 months in Singapore as we were evacuated twice due to their war). After a short time in the Chicago area, we were back overseas in Lahore, Pakistan from January 1976 to August 1978 and then we returned to the Chicago area. Since 1978 I have lived in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois which, except for a few of the winters, has been great. No wars with MIGs having dogfights above us and other planes dropping bombs around us as they did in Dacca. After spending the years since 1981 going to college and sitting in front of a computer designing, testing and supporting manufacturing, insurance and financial applications on the main frame, desktop and web environments, I am sooo glad to be out of it. I now am finding out what I want to do with retirement; taking classes, joining groups and (ugh) keeping house. It's great fun (except for the house part). My husband (2nd) has at least three more years of work before he can join me in retirement. Currently, his main recreation is repairing and modifying guitars. l in Texas (daughter) and Arizona (son). I hope to visit them more. I also am hoping that, after my husband can retire, we will move to Texas to be closer to my daughter. Life, indeed, is good. WORKPLACE My first job lasted 2 weeks. I was a waitress and was let go when John Kennedy was killed and business fell. My next and shortest job was as a nurses' aide at a county nursing home. I lasted four days and quit when they wanted to move me to the terminal ward. Too depressing! My worst job was working at a drive-in/coffee shop/restaurant in a college town from 6 PM to 3 AM where we did everything except cook on the grill. We took and served orders, bused tables, handled the fountain, soups, salads, dishes, cleaned shelves and machines and swept up at closing. No busboys or kitchen staff. And all for 85 cents an hour when minimum wage was $1.25 plus we had to buy our aprons from the owner. The only bonus was that they had excellent curly fries. The owner kept telling me I should 'smile more'. Ah, putting a husband through college. What could be more fun? My work life with computer applications was much more fun and interesting but the hours were really horrible. The last three working years were spent managing multiple projects with Indians both onshore and off. Totally not fun. I now am getting normal sleep hours and really enjoy not being tied to someone else's clock. I was able to read the Hunger Games books without interruption right when they came out. Hope you now are, or soon can be, enjoying retirement as well
