Margie's Story

Margie is from Naples, Florida. Margie is in a domestic partnership. Margie's schools include Oakton High School, Our Lady of Good Counsel School. Margie works(ed) at General Services Administration, SAIC - Science Applications International Corporation. One of Margie's favorite quotes is:""Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it - even if I have said it - unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense." - Buddha". More about Margie:"I was born, cried alot and dirtied some diapers. The first two or three years of my life I spent my days following my older siblings wherever they went. Tommy and Betty were extremely close and perhaps now, looking back, neither one of them were thrilled with the prospect of a new family member (me). Family lore is that they had been longing for a dog. After a couple of years they realized that I wasn't going anywhere. Whatever misgivings they initially had with my existence seemed to be put aside and I was finally included in their fun --- I was invited to watch them from afar as they played their games --- as long as I didn't utter a word. I now believe their act of kindness was a ploy to lower my defenses. I also suspect that while I was napping they discussed my future, or rather my lack of future with the family. I have an early memory of being held by my feet over a porch railing; looking down the 30/40 feet towards the freshly mowed lawn. Oh, excuse me, that was on our family visit to Bellmore, NY to visit Aunt Winty and family. I was being held by my ankles from Aunt Winty's second floor deck just above the hard cement driveway below. It was the porch railing of our third floor apartment in Alexandria, VA that I was dangled from with the view of the green grass that was to soften my landing. I survived that little mishap and around my 5th birthday was enrolled in the local Catholic elementary school. The nuns in the long black and white habits terrified me, but I am very proud to have escaped the ruler/knuckle threats during my seven year stay. I do admit the ladies influenced my sense of style; I still love to dress in black with a little white accent. I somet...Expand for more
imes have the desire to slip a rosary around my neck, but so far have managed to discreetly carry all prayer beads discreetly on my person. The next 20, 30, 40 years flew by. After high school I started my career with a Defense Agency in Arlington, VA, working for other government agencies over the next several years in downtown Washington, DC. Went on to work for a couple of government contractors in Northern Virginia; purpose for the move was to shorten my work commute so I could be closer to home for my daughter, Lea, who was born in January of 1982. Neglected to mention I married in 1980, divorced in 1988. Retired in 2005 and moved to Naples, FL. Raising my daughter as a single Mom wasn't easy but well worth the sweat and tears, she's a wonderful young woman who's going to school while raising her daughter, Julianna. Hopefully I can provide those advantages for Julianna that I was not able to afford for Lea. Private school, music lessons, after school activities, etc. In 1993 I met a wonderful man who's my best friend. Bob is kind, loving, smart, and most importantly, he makes me laugh every day, several times a day. We've been together for the last 18 years and God willing will have many more years in our future. Both Bob and I stopped working in January of 2005 and moved to Naples, FL. We became Florida residents upon our move, but still have a home in Maryland were we spend May to October. Our days are pretty stress free down here. Bob golfs four or five times a week. I go to the beach a couple of times a week. We take the boat out on the Gulf, we've made friends. We have plenty of room for family and friends to viist us. Life is good. Back to the beginning of my life story. The pressure was taken off of me when my little sister, Jean, was born in 1956. It appeared that Tom and Betty finally accepted my existence and didn't question Jean's. Jeannie was the little angel my parents had wanted. I don't believe she was ever threatened to be tossed over a railing. THE ABOVE BIO IS BASICALLY ALMOST COMPLETELY ACCURATE AND TRUTHFUL. SOME POINTS MAY HAVE BEEN EXAGGERATED, BUT NOT GROSSLY EXAGGERATED.".
