Mala's Story

After graduating from MHS, I went to Boston University and got married, before graduating. After graduation, I started moving around the country, as a corporate wife. I have lived in eight different states, and I've also taught foreign language in each of those states. Throughout all of the relocations, I continued my education, earning an M.A., at Miami of Oxford, and a PhD, at the University of New Mexico (French & Spanish Literature and Philosophy). I've spent most of my career teaching upper school foreign language, as well as establishing foreign language departments, developing and certifying curricula, from beginner level through the Advanced Placement levels. In the last decade, I did contract negotiation for Aerospatiale and Dassault aircraft companies,as well as Thiokol, during the Paris Airshows. When not working full-time, I've been a contributing writer for the SAT II's, Spanish and French (literature and language)and Advanced Placement Exams (same specialties); contributed segments to Heinle and Heinle Publishing Co. for a classroom text series, widely used in today's high schools; and lectured at N.Y.U. and U.C.L.A, briefly. I still coach students for the SAT II's and Advanced Placement Exams. Although my career has centered around education, my real passion(o.k., Herbie Kepnes, this one's for you)was for the world of cosmetics (treatments, makeup, perfumes,etc.). I became a student of every brand in the industry (commercial, as well as medical), not to mention a "cosmetic junkie," for many years. I would roam the cosmetic counters, trying to get samples and information from managers and line people to either affirm or refute any research/study that might accompany each line. This was both a pleasant and insightful way to escape from my studies and work. Within the last several years, my second life has mainly dealt with the intriguing world of ballroom dancing (have always been "a closet dancer"). I've competed throughout the country in both the Latin International and American Rhythm styles, working with a professional partner and former U.S. American Rhythm Champion. The whole undertaking has been both challenging and rewarding - challenging, in that I've had to put in more than 15-20 hours/week to prepare for each competition; rewarding, in that I've been able to get feedback (both critical and constructive) from some of the best professionals in the business (all the professionals on "Dancing with the Stars," etc.), as well world champions who represent their countries. Their input contributed to my motivation and subsequent regional and national wins. Have I mentioned how much makeup one gets to wear at these competitive events? ace (unless you're vying for the title of best, all-around drag queen)- not to be outdone by the outlandish hairstyles you get to experience! Of course, you also get to witness a whole other world of characters and behaviors, both serious and bizarre. When not engaged in the dance world, I'm into training and working with larger breed dogs, like Pit Bulls, and specifically, Doberman Pinschers. I always look forward to long hikes in the mountains and running on the beach with these intelligent and graceful animals, several times per week. They're such clowns and imitators; it's no wonder that they quickly become part of you and your personality. Last, but not of least importance, I have two sons. My older son, Matthew, graduated from Berkeley,in Microbiology. He attended University of Pennsylvania Medical School and University of Southern California Medical School and practices Endocrinology at Scripps Hospital, in LaJolla, California. In addition, he teaches other M.D.'s who are currently working on their specialty fellowships, in Endocrinology. Matthew frequently travels and gives seminars to other physicians and professors on diabetes, metabolism-related diseases, and auto-immune disorders. He has two great boys, Jonathan and Evan (ages 6 and 2, respectively), and Dixie, a super wife. My younger son, Joshua, graduated UCLA Engineering, but he chose a Wall Street life. He was working in one of the towers that was destroyed by terrorist actions, on 9/11, and he barely escaped. Afterwards, he took a brief hiatus and decided to get another degree in Environmental Engineering. After a brief partnership with government projects and red tape, Josh returned to the world of financial investing, with UBS (United Bank of Switzerland), in Oakland, California. He recently joined RBC Wealth Management Group, as V.P. and Financial Consultant, in San Francisco. He and his second wife, Marni, are expecting their first child. So, I'm lucky to be blessed with another grandchild! Looking back, I realize that although life has had its good ups and not-so-good downs, I've been fortunate to see my children and, hopefully, my grandchildren develop and mature into decent, human beings and worthwhile contributors to society. Going forward, I would wish that they find every happiness and fulfillment possible, both within and outside their immediate realm. As for myself, I would wish that I shall have lived up to the expectations of my sons and grandchildren, not to mention my own. As time becomes more precious, I would wish for continued opportunities to redefine myself; for the ability to allow for mistakes and not be too self-critical; and for the capacity to invite and accept new possibilities. Give a "holler" if any of you are coming out west!
