Manuel's Story
Life
After three years of decernment for the priesthood it was revealed to me that I should stay in education. So I took the plunge and applied for the Texas Teaching Fellows. This alterative certification program certainly is competitive. I am now working as a the bilingual fifth grade teacher at Central Elementary. It is a lot more work and sometimes I don't know what posessed me to do it. Most times though, I am reminded why I got into education, to make a differece in life.
School
I confessed to my crush at the 10 year reunion and we got a big laught out of it. She was happily married and living out of state at the time.
I really didn't have just one teacher inspire me. Although in hindsight Ms. Peveto turned out to be my biggest influence as an actor.
It would be great to go back and take advantage of certain missed opportunities both academic and personal but, my mistakes and anxieties are a part of who I am now for better or worse. I am who I am.
As a social butterfly nothing sticks out in my mind. I will have to think more about it and get back to you.
Military
Senior year was kind of lonely for me because I was preparing for a military career back then and was sort of cutting off all ties. We all graduated on a Satuarday and by Mo...Expand for more
nday morning I was on a plane to Ft. Sill, OK. Basic was scary and fun at the same time. My brothers favorite memory of me after Basic, though I don't remembering it happening, was when some guy began yelling at us on the street because our car was blocking his way. According to my brother I flew out the window of the car and landed on his hood while I yelled at him through his windshield. I was pretty wired for soundback then.
A couple of days later my leave was over and I reported to New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM. I became a Contract Cadet and trained as an infantry officer around Roswell, Ft. Stanton, and Lincoln National Forest. Let me tell you infantry sucks and mountain warfare is even worse. I started to have doubts about whether or not I could be an Army Officer. Some of those wargames got a little real for my taste. I had a couple of close calls. The first was when I got to close to a mortar simulator and was thrown a couple of feet. The next was when an Apache Helicopter snuck up behind me out of a clear blue sky.
By the time I got to Ft. Riley, KS I was afraid I would do something stupid and get washed out of the program. As it turned out my hearing was what got me thrown out. I was given a medical discharge and sent home.
