Manuel's Story
Life
Right after H.S. I joined the USMC and spent all of 68 in Nam. I experienced all the ca-ca that comes with war including PTSD. I received a bronze star for my efforts. I went to college and played baseball for Santa Ana College until I injured my arm. I then became a student activist and that was fun. I eventually graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1974 with a BA in Social Science and a minor in Theatre. Someone read a script I wrote on drugs and offered me a job writing public service announcements in L.A. I did that plus some commercials on T.V. until my wife (Eva) I married in 1975 attended a play I was doing in Hollywood (a romantic play) and told me no more. My wife Eva, is a principle for the L.A. School District. We have five children four boys and one girls ages 23 to 14. I'm self employed as a government consultant, I enjoy it very much. I have a few clients and they keep me busy. My real passion is running. I started running in...Expand for more
1993 and have completed 13 marathons. While running in the L.A. Marathon (3/2000)I experienced some sharp pains in my abdominal area and had to slow my pace down in order to finish the race. The next day I went to the Hospital and after several tests they discovered that I had a tumor rapped around my right kidney. After a biopsy it was discovered that I had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, so I started my 1st of 8 chemo treatments in March. So far I've received 6 treatments and each one is getting harder to deal with. So far the treatments appear to be working, no new cancer has been detected. Because non-Hodkins lymphoma is a known cancer that can be traced to be caused by exposure to Agent Orange, the VA is taking care of me while I'm in treatment. I expect to be back working and training for another Marathon towards the latter part of this year (god willing). I look at life a little bit different. And I really enjoy smelling the flowers each day. Manuel
