Manuel's Story

After leaving EC for the Navy, it turned out to be one hell of a decade to be in the military. Had I graduated in 62, things would have been quite differant, espcially for a young man, no, actually a teenager. To grow up and go places that I had only read about in Geography, History and other classes at ECW,ECR, HHS. Doing a technical profession that I thought I did not have the where-with-all to learn, much less do and become accomplished at doing it. I had gone to war, gone on missions to Africa (The Congo), Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and even some small countries in the Far East no one heard of, all before Vietnam. Yes indeed, it was an exciting time. But, I would have liked to go to the senior prom, dance and go to White Castle at 0300 slamming down sliders. :O() But, instead I have traveled extensively while in the military (Navy) and in the private sector. In the private sector I worked for NASA. Beginning in Houston at the Manned Orbital Control Center. Communications and Telemetry Data. This was during the last Mercury shots then, the Apollo program began. I transferred to the down-range mis...Expand for more
sile site at GBI Grand Bahama, and went to other sites on islands located in the Indian Ocean, Atlantic. On the Apollo shots, they began to use the Saturn Five rockets. These rockets were so powerful that I could hear them ignite on station (we were 90 miles away) watching them gain altitude over our island was a site to behold, as was, reentry. Apollo 11 was my last shot, and am still very proud to have been on the NASA team who supported that shot. Whenever a tune back from the fifties came over the air, on the islands, I always remembered ECW mostly. Those were my best years. I have more to write about my life. Suffice to say that Marriage and Children were the best and everlastiing memory I will ever have. I was going to college w/ a major in History but, found a new love in Art. I found that sculpting metal and also in clay was very rewarding, very relaxing and the realization of an idea coming to truition, in a three dimenstional form is exciting. So, I switched majors! Wish I had recognized this talent when I was 19 or even 25. Attached are some of my art work in metal and clay sculpting.
