Marc Eckels:

CLASS OF 1969
Granada hills, CA

Marc's Story

Dated February 2012: Lived in Granada Hills from 1956-66. Moved to Hanover, NH, and completed high school there. Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1973 with a degree in geology. Married Lyn Gilmore, also a geologist/geophysicist, right after graduation. We lived and worked in Morenci, AZ; Boston; Hanover, NH; and Denver before starting a family. First of four sons born in Denver in 1983. Moved to rural Roosevelt, UT, in 1986, where remaining three boys were born. Moved to Park City in 2005. Boys have done well: Dartmouth, Northwestern and Columbia, with youngest still in high school. I hope to be able to fund his college education after having been pretty well drained by 12 consecutive years of tuition, room and board charges for his older brothers. Have been in the oil and gas exploration and production business for most of my career. Last 12 years as COO and VP of a small independent operating company, where work involves geology, petroleum engineering, regulatory compliance, fund-raising, natural gas marketing, and whatever else needs to be done. Discovered new natural gas production in Utah's Book Cliffs using 3D seismic technology 2001, and have drilled many successful wells there. Have published a number of papers, lobbied for our industry, worked on legislation and generally tried to help people understand the energy business. Co-founded Sound Geothermal Corp. in mid-1990s to enter the geothermal heat pump business designing and marketing systems for heating and air conditioning. Company does mostly commercial, industrial and institutional projects. Many schools and a few colleges. Active in this company as a director and owner, but not on a day-to-day basis....Expand for more
Eldest son works at Sound. Serve on board of the Utah Geological Survey. Was a private pilot and flew a great deal in the '70s and '80s, when I was working all over the country and living in Denver. That tapered off after we moved to Utah, although I managed a field in northern Montana for a few years and flew there. After that most trips were to Houston, San Antonio, Peru and other places too far to go in a small plane. I miss it. I started playing the trumpet at Rinaldi Elementary in the 1st grade with Mrs. Russell. Played all the way through college, then not much for about 20 years. Started a brass quintet in Roosevelt, and have continued to play ever since. Am currently playing in an 18-piece jazz band with eldest son. Three of the four boys are trumpet-players and one plays sax. One of the blessings of my life has been that my kids all have great taste in music (in other words, similar to mine). We live at 7,000' in a resort town with three great ski areas and try to take advantage of all that Park City has to offer: skiing, hiking, biking, concerts, friends, etc. Walk and hike to stay fit half the year and keep the snow cleared off 100 yards of steep driveway the other six months. Lyn quit her job as a geophysicist when first son was born in 1983 and has volunteered in arts organizations and the boys' schools in lieu of a paid job. The last few years she has counseled high school students on college admissions and enjoys that somewhat seasonal work. Have no plans to retire. Need a reason to get up every morning and enjoy my work too much. If we were friends in "the good old days" or if you remember me, I'd be gratified to hear from you. Regards, Marc Eckels
