Marc's Story

Forty years gone by? Overview A great 29-year marriage to Karen Martha Telander, cut short by her untimely death from cancer in 2009. Two wonderful children, Laura and Erik. After many years of study, an often-enjoyable and productive career as a university faculty member, involved in research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and administration, first at Indiana University, Bloomington and now at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Key points 1971 I began undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and met fellow freshman Karen (a Hamilton High grad) in calculus and chemistry classes. 1973 Karen and I began dating during the fall. 1975 I graduated from University of Wisconsin Madison with a B.S. in Biochemistry, and Karen graduated with a dual B.S. in Chemistry and Biochemistry. I studied for a Ph.D. at Stanford University, and Karen studied for a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. 1979 Karen and I were married in Milwaukee, on December 29. We each added a name, becoming Karen Martha Telander Muskavitch and Marc Alan Telander Muskavitch. 1980 I completed Ph.D. studies in Biochemistry at Stanford, and Karen completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the UC, Berkeley. We moved to Harvard University to pursue postdoctoral studies in molecular genetics. Karen studied plants, and I studied fruit flies. 1984 I moved to a tenure track faculty position at Indiana University, Bloomington, and Karen moved to a independent research scientist position at IUB. While we were at IU, I pursued research on cell signaling underlying developmental decision-making, using genetic, molecular biological and cell biological techniques, and taught courses on gene...Expand for more
tics, molecular biology, infectious disease, biotechnology and research ethics. Karen pursued research on plant genetics, taught genetics and developmental biology, and began a career in research ethics scholarship and education. 1985 We welcomed Laura Telander Muskavitch into the world. 1987 We welcomed Erik Telander Muskavitch into the world. 2000 I moved to a position as chairperson of the Biology Department at Boston College, and Karen became an adjunct faculty member in the same department. We purchased a home in Lexington, Massachusetts. 2005 Karen was diagnosed with brain cancer on Christmas Day. 2006 Karen underwent brain surgery on Valentine's Day. 2007 I began to move into malaria research, on a sabbatical at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focusing on genetics and genomics of mosquitoes that transmit malaria in Africa. 2008 Laura graduated from William and Mary, and moved home. Erik decided to join the Marine Corps. I began collaborations on malaria research with colleagues from the US, UK and Africa. Karen experienced a sharp decline in February, completed radiation treatments, and then improved and stabilized, until late in the year. 2009 Karen passed away, at home, in January. Erik entered and completed Marine basic training during the fall, and then moved on to specialized training in avionics and radar systems. 2010 Erik was stationed on Okinawa. Laura began a masters program in history at the University of Delaware. I began traveling to Mali and Senegal in conjunction with my on-going malaria research. 2011 These days, I'm learning to live in the empty nest, still working on adjusting to life without Karen, and continuing to pursue malaria research.
