Marc's Story
Life
I currently have a dual-career, one as a video artist, doing original, experimental video art installations at galleries and museums in NYC and the tri-state area, as well as experimental mixed-media photography, mixed media sculpture and paintings, and sculptural installations; the other working as an MIS Analyst, Business Analyst, Developer/Programmer and Technical Writer for the Consumer Financial Services Division of JPMorgan Chase Bank in NYC, Information Management & Reporting Department.
I graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1977 with a B.S. in Cinema & Photography, concentrating in experimental film production, minoring in English (concentration in creative writing/poetry & playwriting). I moved to NYC in 1979, and graduated from the New School for Social Research in 1985 with an M.A. in Media Studies (dual concentrations in video and audio production). I have had many gallery shows and exhibitions since then. I also worked as a computer consultant, report developer and programmer/analyst in NYC at Citibank, The Industrial Bank of Japan, Drexel Burnham Lambert, PSE&G, etc. from 1984 to 1998, and have been at JPMorgan Chase since 1/99.
In 1991-1992, I wrote, produced and performed a music single "A Forest Of Trees" and "Soul Kiss" with original band "The Godotones" -- the single played on tri-state area radio in 1992-1993 and received the College Music Journal (CMJ) Jackpot Pick, and a Billboard Songwriting award. I directed and produced a music video for the NYC band 'Static 13' in 1998, which appeared on MTV's "Out From The Underground". Also during this time, I wrote and published poetry, plays, gave readings, produced and directed performances of plays and performance art with various casts.
I currently have recent artwork on display at Xanthi Music recording studios, and proposals to the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan for an original video art installation 'Maya', and the PS1 Museum of Contemporary Art in Long Island City (part of The New York Museum of Modern Art) for a second video art installation "Vapor Field". n of 'Maya' was recently shown at the Hollywood Underground Film Festival in Los Angeles. I incorporated in 1991 as Screen Directions, Inc./Avant Guard Dog Productions, now known as Avant Guard Dog Studios.
Over the next few years, I'll be producing and working on completing a fully original music CD "Something So Simple", a 40-song concept album I began in the 1990's with earlier incarnations of my ongoing band project, The Godotones -- I write/compose for and perform most of the instruments and vocals, but the lineup also includes a good number of guest players and vocalists, and a few members of the early Godotones; release date TBD. As in all of my other forms of artwork, most of the material on this album explores the spiritual and practical choices we make about morality and social justice, our complex psychological states of hope and despair, and how the interplay of these can be traced to the human conflict between compassion and greed. In my work, I try to inspire viewers or listeners to look deep into themselves, to think hard about their life, their relationship with the rest of the world, and with each other. The songs I've written for this album include "Concrete Waiting Room", "Blindfolded Soul", "The Point Of Saturation", "Who Do You Think You Are", "A New Storm", "A Forest Of Trees", "Four Horsemen", "Witness To Prologue", "An Experimental Life", "Waves Everywhere (soul wave frequency)", "Entropy Door", "X Knows Y", "Exit Music For Hyper Baton", "Here Now There Then", "Electrip", "Somnambulist Bedtime Prayer", "Spontaneous Combustion", "Waterfall of Sparks", "Plot", "Strip-Mining Sisyphus Mountain", "Epitaph For Empire", "The World Is Losing You", "Backwards From One Hundred", "Sleep Walk Fog", "The Long Arms of the Fog Tribe", "The Gew-Gaws In Dumb-Down Land", "Escape From A Box", "Parallel World", "Buffalo Dream", "Hungry Creatures & Circling Birds", "I Love You, Anne Frank", "Soul Kiss", "Turn In A Circle", "Heart Beating", "The Charming Strange", "If I Was Me But Someone Else", "Hotel Lobby Slideshow", "Flashbacks", "On The Outside", and the title track, "Something So Simple".
