Marcia's Story
Life
Hello old Killianites! I recall that I was going to be a lawyer, but realized after working for one and seeing the system operate that I could not do it and sleep at night! So I went to the University of Life for about 15 years and then decided to go back to college. Today I am a Radiographer at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville and I LOVE what I do. I work in the ER in the middle of the night on the weekends. and, believe me, I see it all since Shands is a trauma 1 hospital. I'm also a professional photographer.
School
In High School, all I wanted to do was graduate--and I did-almost a year early. No crushes, no cliques, I was fairly independent and not drawn to the cool or the fashinable. Even then, I loved photography and took photo night classes. Abby Hughes was my favorite teacher.
College
I went to MDCC where my mother,Marianne Burr, taught humanities music theory,& piano.Perhaps some of you had her! There,I learned I didn't want to practice law. In my 30's,I went to Santa FE C.C. in Gainesville and graduated with honors from the Radiological Sciences program with a double degree. Also at this time I opened my own business calle...Expand for more
d Klix Foto, where I taught people how to develop their own film & prints & they could rent darkroom time. I also taught community ed photo classes for SFCC & UF and had G'ville's 2nd digital studio. I had to close after my business partner was in a bad car accident. Now, I mainly take pictures of the insides of people!
Workplace
In addition to working at Shands, I have a little part time job shooting xrays at a little doc-in-the-box clinic. It's easy and a lot of fun! I also teach in-services at Shands so that xray techs can keep up their continuing ed requirements. I'm curious how many other people I went to school with are in the medical field.
Military
HMMMM... Military... been there, done that, lived that, as I am an Air Force brat. Enough said. I'd probably get kicked out of the military for being too free minded and independent! Besides, I really don't like being told what to do! Ask me and I'll do about anything for you---just don't TELL me!
I've not been on this site in forever. Since the last time I was here, I survived a widow maker heart attack, became a dementia caregiver to my spouse for a decade, who has since died, and now I teach Tai Chi!
