Marcia's Story

I have been retired now for 2 1/2 years from the CIA after working 35 years. I had a GREAT career with them and leave with no regrets, except it was like moving away from family. The people you meet and work with make a permanent mark on you. Some of the memories are sad (the loss of your friends who were killed and you have to grieve their loss alone); heartbreaking (because they turned on our country); and wonderful (because they play and played such an important part in keeping our country safe for foreign influences). These are the type of people I have met during my career. During this time I had the opportunity to work 3 years in the White House and worked 4 years with Congress. These experiences have been life changing and memorable. [The funny stories I could tell.] My husband is also retired from 35 yrs working for the Navy in Bethesda, MD. About 8 years ago we stumbled on a quaint little town in North Carolina, named "Bath." We bought some property on the water, a jet ski, put in a bulk head and a pier, bought a 20 1/2 Seapro boat, built a house two years later and moved to our new home in Aug 2007. We settled into the little community, transferred our church membership, and became substitute teachers. Beau also became one of the managers of a little country store--he has fit into his "lay back" lifestyle. He bought himself a "Harley, Fat Bob" motorcycle and plays golf as much as he can - never enough. I took painting lessons and really enjoy painting and photography. I have not sold any of my paintings yet but I have some of my photographs. I have always enjoyed sewing and have made that into a little side joy and income also (more joy than income). We had planned to do a lot of travelling, cruising, and attending plays and different ball games. Well, in April 2008 Beau and I again took custody of our daughter's (Kelley) 3 children, Aeryalle, now 12; Steven, 11, and Hunter 10. We still travel--to Ohio to visit our other daughter, Michele, and husband and their three children and two dogs. We also go bac...Expand for more
k to Northern VA to visit our son who still lives there. He is not married and fills his time with working, going to college, and working on his "brewmasters" degree. He also has a Harley and he and his dad ride together. Our cruising is cruising up and down the highway taking the kids to football, softball, baseball, 4-H events to include raising lambs for show, teaching cooking, and horseback riding lessons. Our attending plays and games are at the rec league, school activities, and community theater level. Regrets about our present situation? NO. Just like the many roads to take in a lifetime, there are just as many challenges. The way you face them is up to you. We feel very blessed. The kids have come a long way back to normalcy and are good students. I will save any more stories about them till later. This is the third time we had taken the kids from her--and the last. Not only have I been substituting at all grade level, Beau and I enjoy subbing for the alternative school. We call it the "last chance hotel" for their education. Most of these kids are from the inner city type of life-style and have a lot of baggage with them. It is really different then when we were in school--at least the way I remember it. We had our problems, but not being pregnant at 14 and still sucking your thumb all day at school. Another boy I don't understand is a quiet young man also sucks his thumb all day long and is the leader of a gang in his neighborhood. We hope that we can make a difference to these kids, regardless of how challenging it is. Also, I work for Sylvan as tutor and and as a program coordinator for one of the schools in the county. Presently I am recovering from foot surgery and cataract surgery. Wanted to get it all done before the spring and summer. Also, for the first time since 1975, I have let my hair grow out to its natural color. Mother Nature has done a good job of highlighting my hair--and the price is right. Look forward to taking up golf and any new adventures I can in the "healthy" new year.
