Margaret's Story
After high school, I began studies at SIUE when financing fell through for Illinois College, my first choice. With the war going on and family issues, I married Mike Planitz. While he was away, I worked at St. Louis U in microbiology then switched to protein chemistry research all the while taking courses.
When Mike returned, I joined a choir at SIUE and traveled to Europe and my eyes opened. Not long after, the researcher was moving to Philadelphia so I joined her to set up the lab and, yes, left Mike. The following year I moved to Switzerland to work in a lab in Molecular Biology including genetic engineering. After 3 years and a lot of travel, I moved to Boston having come via India, Nepal, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii.
After 3 years in Boston where I took up serious running (a founding mother of the women's division of the Greater Boston Track Club), I married my husband of now 30 years. I worked at Tufts Univ. in MolBiol, studied computer programming, worked for a few...Expand for more
years as Regulatory Affairs Mgr. for Genetics Institute, then went back to Boston Univ and got a degree in Accounting, Magna cum Laude.
In 1988 we moved to Cincinnati to be nearer family. I got an MBA in Taxation at Xavier Univ where my husband worked. Shortly after, I got my CPA license and opened my own practice (Champion-CPA.com). In 1995, at my son's urging I was certified as a scuba diver which led me to become an instructor, now Master Scuba Diver Trainer, and Emergency First Response instructor trainer (Championdiver.com).
My diving has taken me to many places in the Caribbean as well as Galapagos, Fiji, and Palau. I do love to travel! Just recently our 28 year old son married and we are so looking forward to being grandparents. I still run and just completed my 6th marathon, the first 2 in 1978 and 1979 (Boston, of course!) then 27 years off and started again at age 60.
So much for the highlights. Overall I have been very blessed in my life and enjoy nearly every day still.
