Margaret's Story

Life Surprise. I am a physician living in Charlotte but working in S.C. (don't like commuting, but like the job). Did a stint in a traditional Internal Medicine practice, but real medicine isn't real fun these days -- unless you find a niche where the insanity of our health care system is masked or offset. So I care for patients in a nursing home; work in a clinic for disabled pts twice a week; and serve as medical director for a hospice. The pay is not so great... but I have a flexible schedule and lots of vacation time. And I can see patients for longer than 5-12 minutes when I need to (which is often). Still --- I feel that my talents are underutilized... so I am planning on a thousand other things I can do to rev up the last 30-50 years of my life. I am divorced from Skip Marsden -- but we lasted 18 years (12 OK & 6 horrible). Have 2 adult children and 3 grandchildren from that marriage . I later married Gary Campbell (from Greensboro) and we have one son, Patrick, who is 11 now. Gary works in health care, but thank God, he's not a doctor. My children are my joy! My daughter, Jessi, is a music teacher, minister's wife, and a great mom. My adult son, Graham,is the web designer for Nature.org (Nature Conservancy) and he is also a survivor of childhood leukemia. He relapsed after 3 yrs of chemo at age five and was not supposed to live -- but here he is. A great kid (he's 27), smart, witty, and he shares the politics of his mom! (I went to med school b/c of our time at Duke Hosp.) My youngest, Patrick, is the only blonde-haired one of the bunch. He is known for his constant smile, his kindness, and his very high amount of energy (though he can pay attention if it involves reading Harry Potter books, etc). I have lived in High Point, Manhattan (I was a Theatre major at HPU and tried acting --mostly auditioning --for 2 yrs till my second baby was born and we moved back to NC), Durham (while attending Med School at Chapel Hill),Greensboro (twi...Expand for more
ce), and now Charlotte (for the last 4 yrs). Still miss Greensboro. Lived there the longest. Went back to High Point a few times over the last two years. My mother died and we had her funeral and burial there. High Point is very different now. Travel some --intend to travel a lot more often and to more exotic places. My family, my adult children and their spouses, and my brother and his family are all going together to Ireland next spring! I got into genealogy quite heavily two years ago when I found all sorts of memorabilia stashed in my mom's storage trunks. I have tin photos from Albemarle, NC, and very old photos from Ireland, etc. Turns out, I am Louisa May Alcott's 5th cousin, 5 times removed. But, I am Kelly Pickler's 5th cousin 5 times removed as well. ( Pickler is not related to Alcott...) I am a Christian -- but generally, though not predictably with every issue - liberal in my political views. Love to read - little time to do so. Write some. I never enjoyed high school as much as a lot of other people. I don't think I was very popular. I lived on the wrong side of town. And I didn't fit in anywhere. My reasonably successful Irish father died of a sudden heart attack when I was 8. He died without insurance and his printing business assets were used up quickly. My mother then moved us from Ft Lauderdale to her hometown of High Point. But, there - we were poor and I had to sew my own clothes. Fortunately, we girls all took Home Ec, remember? I hear from W. Warren occassionally and at times hear about others. But don't have a lot of contacts with them. What have I not told you? That we have 3 cats? That I watch Martha Stewart, Big Love, and The Tudors? That I'd enjoy hearing from people I knew long ago? That I look forward to the future -- unless it is as portrayed in the book, The Road (grim but meaningful), or the movie, Idiocracy (hysterical but crass). Say Hi - if you remember me.
