Margaret's Story

My Mom didn't go back to school until she was 28, so the question wasn't "are you going to college?" it was "YOU ARE GOING TO COLLEGE!" She started me going to LDSBC the MONDAY after I graduated from high school. I went to LDSBC from 1985-1987 and then again 1989-1991. Between 1987-1989 I had 2 temporary jobs. After my Sister left the VAMC to work at Hercules, my Mom sent me to the VA to replace my Sister at Fee Services. After volunteering there for a year I was a Clinic Clerk for 6 months. After the VA I got a temprary job at Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) helping to develop a filing system for all of their sub stations. WAPA oversees all of the dams that generate electricity from the reservoirs like Lake Powell. I really should have went on a mission while I had all of that money but I chose to go back to LDSBC, pay for my own schooling and graduate this time! I earned an Associaties degree in Medical Assisting. My Mom thought that I got a certificate like her and my Sister did, so when it came to graduation day my Mom couldn't find my name and she was afraid that I didn't pass my classes. A friend of mine whom I invited to my graduation but I didn't expect to attend (not Lance) found my name and notified my Mom where my name was. She was totally shocked! When I applied for work after graduation all I did was collect a whole bunch of rejection letters because they said that I had no experience. Eventhough my Mom was married and had 2 kids she always had a big fear of being alone just like her Mom did which makes absolutely no sense to me. As a result I only had a few temporary jobs because Mom wanted someone to stay home with her because eventhough Dad had to retire from the UofU Radiobiology Lab when he was only 61 years old, he continued to work. For 3 years I worked in the LDS Church Membership as a Church Service Missionary which one of my neighbors recruited me for while he worked at the Church Office Building. When you get the inspiration to serve a mission, I strongly encourage anyone to go at the time you get the idea because it really screws up the order of things when you don't follow through with it. One of my other neighbors found out that my parents had a kid that wasn't working steady so she called me to help her with a bath 3x a week. After I had been helping her for 3 years she called her grand daughter in San Diego CA to come help her. Her grand daughter used to be a LPN but had a back injury that stopped her career, so she had some time on her hands anyway. The last 3 years I helped ...Expand for more
her she decided to stop walking and her grand daughter taught me how to move her and clean her up while she was mostly in bed or in a wheelchair. After I had helped my neighbor for 4 years I needed to find real work so I wouldn't be so available to her lazy family (not including her grand daughter). I took a CNA class from Oct 24-Dec 23, 2000, 8 months after my Mom died. I took the test to get certified as a nurse's assistant and was passed off by Jan 2001. I applied for work and was hired as a CNA at Applegate Homecare on Feb 26, 2001 and I have been working there for the past 7 years. Applegate couldn't say that I didn't have any experience by that time. I want to go back to school and get into occupational therapy I am amazed that I have been able to work as long as I have but when I see my Grandpa Phelps in the next life I can honestly say that from birth to death I personally made sure that my Mom was NEVER in an institution. I am very proud to say that she died at home and I was able to keep her out of a rest home. My Dad officially quit working about a year after Mom died. Since I was 8 years old I watched my Dad be in charge of his Mom's, oldest brother's and one of his Sister's affairs. I also watched my Mom help the lady who helped Grandma Little give her a bath and I also remember my Grandma screaming because she didn't want to take a bath. I got in the habit of helping old people since my parents are both older. I used to tease my Mom that I didn't have to work in a rest home because I lived in one. After Mom died I had to go to Applegate to find more grey haired people to help. My Dad will turn 82 in 2008 and he hopes to make it to 100. If he makes it to 104 the LDS Church will turn 200 years old. The church was organized 100 years before my Mom was born. Before Mom's 70th year when we watched conference we used to tease Mom that she was 160+ etc depending on how many annual conferences there have been. My Sister still works for the federal government and she has been there for 22 years. When Dad creeps into his 90's she'll be a retired government worker like my Mom's brother. Well this is getting a little long so I better sign off. ON SOUTH HIGH!!! PS: For all of you curious people out there yes Lance and I are still good friends, no neither of us are married and if you want to know why we never married each other you'll have to ask Lance about that, not me. No I do not live with any man before I get married because men don't buy what they can rent! Whew I am so glad that I cleared that up!!! ;-P
